I set-up a wireless caller about 30yards away with a deer tail tied to a branch, using fawn distress sounds. I,ve been in ona few Lions kills, never taken one myself, calling is the hardest way to get a Mountain Lion, and to do it with a recurve??? It will be even sweeter when I do it…

It absolutely can be done. Years ago I was scouting elk pre-season when I spotted a big tom crossing the canyon in front of me several hundred yards away.I had an elk diaphragm in my pack and decided, “Why not?” A few minutes later, I saw a big tail twitch right behind me… Well, it seemed like a good idea at a time. Since then, I’ve had friends inadvertently call in cats while calling turkeys and elk, and even rattling for deer. Those approaches all wound up aggressive, close range, and scary. Of course, every time I’ve deliberately tried calling cougars during the season, there’s been no reply. My hounds make a great Plan B. Don

Don,
Sure wish they allowed dogs down here in the Black Hills of SD. We have a lot of BIG cats around, and they are eating themselves out of house and home. Have spoken with some trappers in the area, not a porcupine left in the hills since the increase in cat numbers over the last few years. Come on down if you ever want a challenge for a big kitty.

I was talking to a fella here who hunts pigs with his pig dogs and started telling him about some of Don’s articles I’ve read about using hounds to hunt lions and the basic process as I understand it, which involves the lion running away from the dogs and eventually treeing.
A Zimbabwean chap who was listening in on the conversation chimed in and in his wonderfully thick accent said “That sounds very strange, a lion running from hounds.”
To which the gravelly voiced pig hunter replies “It’s not bloody Mufasa mate, it’s a mountain lion!”
I laughed so hard I nearly burst and I’m laughing now writing it, but fear it is “you had to be there” kind of comedy 😀
