Hi every one I have been a reader of TBH for a while but always shot a compound. well i finaly did it I traded in my mathews outback and bought a 50#martin mamba. im so glad I did it I love how it feels and shoots no release or pins. it just feels so mutch nicer carrying it around also. Now i just have to figure out the proper arrow set up? i was shooting my carbons from my compound the other night they have those super spin vaves not sure if they are ok to shoot or not. my grouping was pretty close and after about 30-40 shots a managed to put 2 arrows from 15yards in a old spray paint can someone was so generous to leave in the woods for me. any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks

NewB,
We will need some more information, what size are the carbons you are currently shooting? Are you shooting off the shelf or from an elevated rest? Sounds like you are in the ball park with what you have now, but we probably can help you become more consistent with a little tweaking. Remember if you not breaking or losing arrows you are not shooting your bow! -
the arrows im shooting now are vapors by blackhawk.they say 4000=55/70 and from the farthest point on the nock to ware the tips screw in are 29.5 inches. im shooting of the shelf also im shooting 125gr field tips. thanks for any advice

if it works great. most people find vanes kick off when shooting from shelf but do know one fellow who got excellent flight with vanes. try stripping vanes off one and shoot it bareshaft. still good, then feathers might be more forgiving. worse try feathers. either way fletch the bareshat with feathers and try. hitting where you are looking is great but wobble arrow flight will rob power if you hunt

duh forgot. weigh that arrow. if it is typical compound weight arrow it is way to light and may damage your stickbow.the arrow should weight at least 7 grains per pound to insure against breakage but the more suggested weight of 9 or 10 grains will make a better hunting arrow and read Ashby study on arrow weight for an even different perspective.

from wat i found on ther website the arrows weigh 8.9 gpi witch would = 262.55gr. do you ad the tip weight in or is that just a shaft weight of 7 grains per pound?

Huntergatherer, just saw your post. Welcome to the site. Now that a few months have past, wondered how you are doing with your arrow set up.

Hi. It’s very short notice, but you should think about attending the White Mountain Traditional Bowhunters Rendezvous in Tyngsboro, MA, next weekend, Aug. 6-8. I’m sending you a copy of the flyer by PM.
Some very experienced traditional bowhunters attend, and they’re very welcoming and helpful toward newbies like you . . and me. 😉 I’ll be there on Saturday, driving an orange Honda Element and lugging around two old selfbows. Hope to see you there!
