I never really used bows when I was younger ( I am 22), and this year I got a wild hair to shoot traditional. Now all I want to do is shoot. I was given a 50# Grizzly by Fred Bear for my birtday, and I was given a dozen wood arrows for Christmas. I shoot with a glove, and have practiced quite a bit and have hunted some with my new bow, but refuse to shoot anything over 20 yards even though I have been able to accurately shoot 30-35 yards. Being new to the trad scene and this site for that matter, I was wanting to propose a question of what broadheads and small game tips I could and should use for wood arrows. As of this moment I really do not want to shoot carbons.

        Thanks,
        -Andrew

Welcome to the forum. Getting new arrows for Christmas is always a good thing. The guys on here are just full of good info and Dr Ashby’s Arrow Lethality study posted here is a very good resource too. In fact there are some current threads posted about broadheads and small game heads that you could look through. The main thing is, just have fun with it!

I will definitely read more. I noticed a lot of the discussions are based on screw in broadheads, but I am sure that a lot of us shoot wood more often than not. 😀

True. You will see alot of carbon users in the arrow lethality forum but the basic formula can be used on wood if that is the route you want to go. Me? I’m still using the 10 grains per pound of draw weight adage for total arrow weight that many have used for decades.
As for broadheads, the old Bear razorhead, if you can find them, tops my list of best 145 gr 2 blade heads I have used. Nowadays I mostly use Zwickeys 125 gr or 135 gr. I’ve used Snuffer 125 gr glue on with good results but these are not the easiest to sharpen. I found that some of them sharpen better than others from the same package.
For small game I’ve used 11/32″ rubber blunts. Contrary to what you may hear, rubber blunts will kill squirrels and rabbits graveyard dead IF used at relatively close range.
I am currently testing some Ace Hex Heads. They look good an fly good and others on here swear by them. Just have not had an opportunity yet. In early season I had too many squirrels around me and when ever I moved to draw I got busted. Maybe late season I’ll get a few.

I most certainly have much to learn about the ways of the trad. I truly appreciate your guidance on the broadheads. I will look around for the Bear although like u said they may be hard to find. I will also look into the Ace Hex Heads. Thanks again.

I have some Bear Chisel Tips, but they are screw in and not glue on broadheads.:(

I shoot wood arrows also. I shoot Eclipse 145 glue on broadheads and use Zwickey Judo tips for small game. Blake at Eclipse makes a great broadhead at a great price take a look

Welcome Ssumner1! There is nothing like the wood aarow! I use magnus heads, and have never had a problem with them, but any well made head will do if it is scary sharp and put in the right spot. Traditional Archery is more about the archer and less about the gear. Welcome!

Anything other than WOOD.. just ain’t Cool!!!8):P

Welcome, Andrew.. you will find as many likes and dislikes as there are archers. It really is an individual thing.

Just remember… Have FUN with it!!! 😀

Howdy, and welcome. Andrew, as far as broadheads go, I find heads with a straight edge (as opposed to convex or concave) to be easier to sharpen. The big wide Magnus II heads have worked great for me in the past.

The ACE HEx HEads are my favorite small game head. Very deadly.

As for wood vs everything else, don’t sweat it. Shoot what you want. Folks on other forums will make it a serious argument…don’t fall into that trap. I shoot wood, aluminum, and carbon….whatever my bow shoots best. I probably shoot carbon the most, aluminum second, and wood the least…..but that is my preference only. As far as performance on deer sized game, I have never seen a lick of difference.

Enjoy yourself! Traditional archery is one of the best hobbies you can pursue. Have fun!!

I started with carbon arrows, but now shoot woods only, I love to make them and they fly great out of my longbows! As to broadheads I use Ace standards 145 gram and also have some Magnus snuffers! As to small game heads I use mostly Blunts and judos would like to try some of those Ace Hex heads at some point! Its all personal preferance thing as to arrows points etc, they all will get the job done!

I have a long draw, so sometimes its hard to find long wood shafts, but I like the footed hexshaft that can be made as long as you need with a little more weight up front if heavier hard wood is spliced in. Mike

I’ve played around with aluminum and carbon but I just like the romance of putting together my own wood arrows. I try to stay in the perameters of 10 grains of weight per pound of draw weight and I ‘ve had no problems with taking game. I’m still amazed of what a well placed shot and a properly balanced and sharp broad head can do. I use Zephyr broadheads because they are the easiest for me to sharpen. As far as small game points go I’ve used Judos to empty shell casings, .357 fit 11/32 well, and again find out what works best for you and youe gear. Andrew play around with as much as you can to find an good formula that works for you. The journey for me is as much fun as the destination.

It’s a different world, this traditional archery. Welcome. Oh to be 22 and bouncing through the woods with a new bow setup. You are a lucky man. You have a whole lot of future to work with! Keep at it, and try different setups gradually. You fall into a good groove, and develop likes and dislikes natural to you. No Joe Blow on TV to tell you different. Enjoy!

Jon/Cottonwood — no doubt the wee hours of your posting accounts for the brevity of your post, above. 😛 Only times I’ve been up at 3:45 were in the old days of turkey hunting, and when I was working graveyard 6 nights a week putting myself through college (pre-military). I hope you’re having more fun than I did. 😀 dp
