Saturday I had the pleasure of taking a friend hunting with me. He has had some introduction to hunting as a teenager, but never really pursued it as an adult. We were sitting on the edge of a swamp. He was backed up right against the swamp thickets and I was a few yards in front of him. After an hour and a half of sitting a buck materialized right next to us. However, instead of walking along the game trail before me, he was walking by just inside the thicket-swamp. This brought him within 10 yards of my buddy, for an up close and personal look at a young 4 pointer. Unable to swing around for a shot, even if there was an opportunity, which there was not, we just walked him walk by. It was really thrilling to see something with a guy that doesn’t usually hunt. Hopefully this will light a fire. He commented later, “I didn’t realize bowhunting was so difficult.” Also, interesting to note: this deer was walking with the wind, instead of against or across it.

I’ve often read, heard and seen bucks walk with the wind blowing up their backside (would make me light headed). From what I hear, that wway they use their eyes to spot danger ahead and the wind coming from behind clues them about any danger approaching from the rear.
Makes sense…at least till I find a deer that will talk to me and reveal their secrets:D

After reading about deer walking with the wind in Boyd Iverson’s “Blacktail Trophy Tactics” I started paying attention. And since, I have seen multiple deer, elk, and bears moving with the wind, or not really into the wind the way I usually thought they would. It was a real eye opener for me.
