With the little actual experience I have, I’d say you’re both in luck and in for a challenge. This just might be a golden age of bow making. Seems like there are a lot of excellent makers out there.
I have a long bow made by Leon Stewart, of Coatesville, PA. http://www.stewartsarchery.com . He’s a great guy, excellent maker and a wealth of information. He’s also very active in his local club, West Caln Sportsman’s Club. He’s definitely made me a better archer. I love the bow. It does all the good stuff a great bow is supposed to do. Enjoy the search. dwc

wolfkill,
I have a couple Bear bows that I shoot, currently. Have shot a few others, mainly from local bowyers to my old stomping grounds in NW MT. I have shot Bear Paw bows, built by Neil Jacobson, a few Shafer Silvertip bows by Dave Windauer, and a couple of Dan Toelke’s longbows. All are very well made bows. I agree with what was said above. If you’re going to spend good money, you might as well get the bow you want. Shoot as many as you can before you make a choice. Some bowyers have trial offers where they will send you a bow to try for a bit and see if you like it. Look for those. I know Black Widow does it. Not sure who else. Good luck finding YOUR bow!!

those are my favorite bows. I had a 57# tomahawk SS diamond, 62″ long that I really shot well. better than my same specs BW longbow. My classic hunter is the only bow I shoot nowadays. for the last three years. it’s 56″ 55#
javaman who designed the CH, now makes the Elkheart, very similar. I will get one!
To me, the advantages of the Elkheart are the short length and the killer handle.
Good luck!

I haven’t shot a lot of bows but I dont think I will ever stray from bob lee. It shoots great and the guys at bob lee are REALLY helpful. It seems like my bow is easier to draw than any other 60lb bow I have ever shot. Bob lee signature 64 inch 61 lb @31 inches.

You’ve received many great suggestions from solid bowyers already. There are so many excellent bows being made today, and so many personal variables, that it’s really an overwhelming question.
At some point, I think many of us encounter that admittedly subjective, “perfect” bow and we develop an affinity for that particular bowyer. It isn’t that there aren’t many other equally great options out there, but we stick with what speaks to us, and what we’ve grown to love. And once we’ve found that bow, and our inevitable wandering eye starts to look around for the next one, it’s hard not to go back to that same bowyer again, since you have a very good idea of what you’ll be getting.
For anyone who follows this forum, my choice won’t be a surprise. I love Robertson Styk bows. Why? Because I think that they are works of beauty that sacrifice nothing when it comes to performance, built by someone who has been honing his craft for a long time. Something ‘clicked’ the first time I wrapped my hand around the grip of a Robertson, and it’s still there every time I pick one up. And I’m sure most people would say something similar about whatever their favorite bow is as well.
But if you’re looking for a 3-piece recurve, I would highly recommend checking out their Fatal Styk. They even have a “try-out” program so you can see if it’s what you really want or not.
Here’s mine:

I have a 70′ s era Bear Grizzly that shoots well and has that classic look. The other bow I have is a Jim Reynolds Thunderstick (Mi. bowyer) that I just stumbled upon at the time and has grown on me since. It’ s only 45 lb but plenty for the local whitetails and carries like a feather which means a LOT to me. In no way can I speak with the depth of knowledge some here have, but those 2 bows can drill them in if I do my part.

A buddy of mine also has a Thunderstick and likes it quite a bit.
