Regrettably, I have to leave these beautiful mountains and the warm home of David and Caroline. It was an amazing hunt! I was able to stalk what I thought was an Elk in the aspen jungle but turned out to be a sow and a cub at about 20 yards. It scared me a little! Also, I almost had a shot at beautiful Elk bull last Sunday evening, at the same spot I let another go last year. We kinda bumped onto each other on the same trail. I was able to scramble 15 yards away from it on my hands and knees and nock an arrow, but he decided to veer left downhill and walk behind a big Ponderosa blowdown instead of in front!! The nerve!! By the time he was clear, it became a 25yards, walking quartering away shot, that I didn’t take. a 5-10″ deflection could have spelled disaster. I cow called once. He stopped and turned around. I should have not called again, ’cause he was outta here in a hurry!:o
After that, I hunted hard from sunrise to sunset everyday, but the Elk disappeared and didn’t even bugle.
But I had a magnificent time! I go home filled with great memories and a head full of knowledge. This was my 4th trip here. I sure don’t want to leave. I will be back next year
PS: Good Luck to Thomas Downing and his dad this weekend!
        Get one, Bro’ !

Alex…glad you had another experience of a lifetime. Thanks for sharing your encounter with the bull. I’m sure you did the proper thing by not taking the 25 yd. shot. There’s next year for you…8) Wayne

As much as I look forward to bowhunting whitetail……I’d trade my 3 month season for the 3 minutes or less you had with that bull!

Visualizing such and knowing the rush I would have gotten with the thoughts of a POSSIBLE shot at a bull elk has me near stuttering!

Two elk hunts in my younger years, both disasters without a single elk bugle heard……let alone one seen.

The posts here on bowhunting elk fire me up like nothing I can read otherwise, and I give thanks that my brethren like you and David…..and others, have a life including the reality of having such at hand, short though the seasons may be.

Whitetail give me long, long days and many weeks of great times, great memories, immeasurable amounts of education and are, indeed, my life quest and therefore they are priceless…….one chance at a shot at a bull elk would have been my “once in a lifetime” dream.

Lots of “pros” within my life of bowhunting deer yet there always remain dreams of more. Grass is greener syndrome. LOL

But yet…….my glass is not half empty but more near 80 percent full, which I give thanks for annually. No complaints that have merit to be honest.

Post photos of your bull…..next year! 😀
            God Bless

                  Packing David’s elk!!!
PS: I had 2 hats with me. This one is The Traditional Archers of New Jersey hat. The camo hat is a New York Bowhunters hat.
I had to bring my colors in the Colorado Mountains and represent!!!

Last night, I kept hearing wood cracking while waiting quietly near a spring. I swear I felt my heart coming out of my chest!

Great post, Alex. Elk time is rich time, meat on the back or not.

And yeah, who makes that “camo” pattern?
