Today when I was loosing a few arrows in my daily practice session. I wondered what it would be like to shoot with bare fingers? So I tried it and was astonished on how much quieter it was ! I’m talking a big difference here ! I alternated from fingers to tab and the difference being quite noticeable. Am I getting string vibrations from the tab ? A better release with my raw fingers ? Perhaps , perfect string to finger crease alignment? Not sure but I sure wish my tab shooting was as quiet as my fingers ! Lastly, the tab out -shot the fingers hands down !! Haha!

Been a long time since I tried shooting with just bare fingers. As I recall it was hard on the digits! Although I can see where it could be quiet, and possibly more accurate, if you were tuff enuff. Interesting experiment. I am not sure I could take the finger pinch of my short bows for long —
Anybody else out there shoot bare fingered.
I also remember trying in my youth ( a while back – haha) those rubber finger tabs that you could put on the serving. Don’t recall much about them. Except I went back to a glove.

In the first volume of the video series Masters of the Bare Bow, Roger Rothhaar shows how he shoots bare fingered. He builds up the serving to make it easier on the fingers.
I tried it. Didn’t like it. I do like a Damascus glove, which is the next best thing to bare fingers.
These days though, I shoot a hard hill style glove. Takes some getting used to, but nothing gives as clean a release imo.

I find the thickness of leather I like and make my own tabs.. Only one layer of leather. The tabs with two layers, or three like Black Widow tabs, can make noise when the layers of material slap together after the release.
I do also shoot with a glove with my hunting bows by the way. Works better for me with higher poundage.
Self does take a bare finger shot now and then just to prove to self that self can do it but also as a reminder for self to always have spare tabs or gloves stuck in several places in self’s belongings in case self goes off trekking and self has forgotten tab or glove because bare finger shooting hurts self’s fingers big time. :-))

There’s a possibility that when shooting bare fingers you are trying hard to keep the pain to a minimum and using a nice deep hook and proper form. Those things seem to quiet the bow for me. When the bow gets loud, I know I’m getting lazy with my form. I’m mainly shooting a Duraglove and sometimes a Black Widow griptite and more recently I tried a Black Widow tab. My nocks are too loose to use a tab. I dry fired my bow a couple weeks ago and it scared the Bejesus outta me. dwc

On a side note, I own the Masters of the Barebow series. They are all phenomenal archers. Did you take a good look at their targets? They miss on occasion , just like us ! Haha!!
