I really enjoyed TJ’s story in the new TBM. He enjoyed simple, relaxed hunts near home, hunting alone or with a few friends. In a respectable manner, he took game any true bowhunter would be proud of. That’s my kind of bowhunting.
Not once did he plug an outfitter’s business, tip the guide, tell us how good the food was, show us the lodge, etc, etc. His hunt wasn’t filmed for a TV show either.
As one who is peeking over the slippery slope to becoming one of the “old guys” myself, I can identify with his return to view the changes in a familiar hunting spot. I too have been disappointed in changes that have affected some of my old spots. Taking an elk there, on his own, must have been the high point of a great hunting season.
Yes, TJ. it truely was “One Of Those Years”. Thanks for taking me along.

Hi Darryl:
Thanks for the kind comments. Indeed, it was good year, one that I doubt will be repeated in this lifetime. I was fortunate as I never really set out to do much more than enjoy my time afield, do some writing, and do some internal soul searching. And yes, the elk was, indeed, a real thrill … size meant nothing.
It has been hard to get back into writing the last year and half, and after dealing with deaths both with close friends and then my father, well … I decided I had to sit down and get to it. One thing I learned through all this is that we must live live fully and relish every day.
Glad you enjoyed the piece.

Good one Darryl. In the past year or so I’ve spoken with quite a few ‘graying’ bowhunters who are in complete agreement with TJ as far as living each day, appreciating what is all around us, and hunting more for the pure enjoyment of time afield. Taking a critter home is moving way down on the list…
So, hopefully we can share a few campfires and or hunts before we’re ‘gone under’. 😀

Thanks Mr.Conrads for the great article. I hope your new freezer is holding up well.

I too especially enjoyed the article. In a day and age where newer means better its nice to know there are a few greybeards and future greybeards preserving our heritage. Keep up the good work.

Hate to tell you Darryl, but as a physician and your editor you are already well on your way down that slippery slope along with the rest of us. As for the plantar fasciitis, TJ is welcome to stop by for a free injection any time (even though the last one damn near killed him.) don
