Hi everyone!
What a trip this morning has been! The season has been tough for us up here in the Hudson Valley! Very few deer sightings, or far away. Saturday, since it was too warm to hunt, at least for me, and since my usual hunting spots and tactics were not working, I felt that I needed to change up and create something new, so I hiked about 2 miles to a distant ridge thick in laurels and dead hemlocks that I used to hunt years ago but haven’t in about 7-8 years. After I spooked a nice buck, I felt I was in the right place! I decided to use a tree stand, found an appropriate tree, gps’ed it and left quickly. I came back this morning really early with my climber (I had to take out of storage!!) one hour before sunrise, and at 7:30 this guy gave me a perfect 10 yard broadside after watching him chasing a doe for 1/2 hour! I made a really good double lung shot with my Black Widow PCH recurve and an arrow tipped with an ACE broadhead. He bolted for 40 yards, stopped for 5 seconds, looked back, and charged downhill full speed for another 50 and tipped over. So, a new place and new tactic, a climbing tree stand! That worked for me today! Now back on the ground again! 8)
Things can change so quickly in hunting!

Nice buck Alex and looks like a beautiful place to hunt.

Nice job Alex! No luck yet up my way but one more weekend to try.

Thank you guys! and yes, Wojo, it is beautiful country up here! Very steep though. The “path of least resistance” doesn’t apply to the deer here, as I watch them go straight up the hills all the time!

wahoo wrote: congrats on the buck. How you liking the Widow and FA wool?
After 9 years shooting longbows exclusively, I went back to the heavy handle BW recurve in the middle of last year’s season out of necessity because I had suddenly developed bad habits while hunting: poor anchor, target panic, wounded animal, etc…. I wasn’t sure I was gonna stick with the recurve, but I grew to love it, and it shoots so well that it seems to correct any form mistakes I might make! So it will be my hunting bow for a while! The FA wool is cool. I use it as a sweater under a jacket, or as concealment over a windstopper fleece. It’s not warm enough worn alone, unless in mild weather

Looks fantastic!!! Great work!!!

Alex, nice job with the mount. That’s a hunt to remember. Great approach to solving problems from choosing your bow to choosing your stand. Congratulations! Dwc

The mount looks great. Good story too, you’ll never forget the day you put the pieces together and landed that nice deer.

GREAT!!! Nice to hear about your success!! Not calling it luck. There may be some luck there, but without the skill, knowledge, and just plain woodsmanship, the luck would be wasted. YOU got a deer!!
On the other hand, you need a dirty old hat…

Congrats Alex, great hunt!! You are right about the sightings this year.
I have seen less deer this year than I can remember. Still trying for mine.
