I’m looking for suggestions and recommendations I’ve been using a SOG PowerPlier for close on 10 years and it’s about time it was pensioned off.
I’m considering a Leatherman Wave, very nice, but before I invest what is everyone else using and what do you recommend.
Look forward to your comments, Mark.

Hi Curtis, I’ve been told how good Leatherman’s no quibble guarantee is it’s good to have that confirmed, its just one more thing that makes me think its the way to go. I’ll check out the Super Tool 300, not sure I’ve seen one.

I’ve been carrying my original Leatherman since 05/92 and hope I never have to replace it. It doesn’t have all the niceties or some of the goodies the newer models have but it does me well. I couldn’t guess how many sand burrs I’ve plucked off of my boots and clothing with it if nothing else. I know that as well as this has held up if I ever replace it it will be with another Leatherman product I’m sure. 😀

Thanks for the contributions folks, looks like I’m off to buy a Wave.

Look into the Gerber tools, too. I used to have one, but it broke or I lost it or loaned it to somebody, and it is no more. Never had any problems with it that I can remember, and I used it daily for a few years.

I’ve worn a leatherman nearly every day for the last 10 or 15 years. A Wave for the last 2 or 3. It’s a good tool, the only complaint I have is it has a nasty pinch point if you are using the pliers and your hand is up near the front of the handles and it slips, so be careful!

I have a Leatherman Super tool the wife got me for Christmas more than 10 years ago. Although it has not seen daily use it is a very well made tool and the first time I carried it on a float trip I sheared a pin on my outboard in low water so I used my Leatherman to make the repair which was why I wanted it. It lives in the glove box ready to go along.
For everyday I carry a Swiss Army knife. It even has a very sharp saw but the scissors get the most use clipping leaders and unruly mustache hairs.
With my Fly fishing kit I have a Leatherman Clip, a small version of the multi-tool with scissors instead of pliers.

I’ve carried a Leatherman since I was 15 (bought it on the second day of ’95, I believe). I have to agree that their warantee service is top notch. I did something stupid with the file, broke it off, and when it came back they had put a brand new knife blade on it just because they could tell I had sharpened it a few times. I like the new Wave version, but can’t justify buying one when “old faithful” still serves me so well.
I sometimes swap the Leatherman for a Victorionox swiss army knife. It has everything (plus a few) other than the pliers. Also a great tool. -
CRKT makes the Zilla-tool, a great hardworking multi-tool. The most usable tools are included and accessible. You don’t have to fold and unfold to use the pliers. My only complaint is the case leaves a lot to be desired.

I like most of the multi-tool kits on the market, however, prefer the lighter ones that will house scissors, toothpick and tweezers and has a large lockblade, hence, the Victorinox. As an added bonus the scales are usually bright coloured, and I can actually find it when I set it down. I do not use the case that is provided by Victorinox (poor quality) and use one of my own instead, either leather or cordura.

I have used many different multitools over the years, mainly because I like to buy/collect knives and multitools. As with any product there are going to be pros and cons. My main complaint on most multitools was the blade placement, often not allowing quick and easy access to a knife. I usually carried a pocket knife with my multitool just because of this. But last year I purchased a leatherman skeletool, which has the blade placed on the outside, making it a very quick and functional knife along with a very well made multitool. Since then my pockets have been a lot lighter on a daily basis with only having the skeletool to carry around. My advice is to go to a store and ask to look at them all, open them up and think about what feature you would use the most…….

I have a Buck ‘Buck Tool’ that I got in a trade a while back. The thing I don’t like about it is the way the handles fold sideways. If you try to twist something the handles just fold in on your fingers and you lose the leverage you need.

Here is what I carry bowhunting, the multi tool is an unknown name but it has a serated blade that has a file on it, flat edge and file, bottle/can opener, with a small philips head screw driver, regular knife blade and pliers that is nice and thin, but very strong. I can carry this with my sharpening tool as well (upgrading this item). The carry case I got at Home Depot in the tools section.
