I’ve been following Charlie Alshiemer’s(sp?) prediction formula for whitetail rut for a number of years now and it seems pretty accurate for us eastern bowhunters. Do any of you westerners have a feel for timing on the mule deer rut. I’ve booked a hunt in southern Alberta this fall and will be there between Nov 14th & 20th. Will I be hunting the seeking, chasing or breeding timeframe or will the rut be over by then?

Dennis, around our parts here in southern Colorado, the mule deer rut is just getting started by Nov. 14th. It might be a little early but the rut is right around the corner. The bucks have shed their velvet by then and are engaging in the last of their pre-rut rituals. However, it might be a bit different up in Alberta…Valerius Geist has an excellent book called Mule Deer Country and he claims that the mule deer rut is usually in full swing by the 15th of Nov. I highly recommend this excellent book, it is a tremendous source of information on all things mule deer. T

I am afraid I know little of phases as far as the Mule Deer rut is concerned, but around home here in Northern Alberta I have seen bucks chasing does from the latter half of the first week of November, to the 20th of December. As it always seems with Mule Deer, thier actions are hard to peg down.

In western North Dakota they were chasing big time on Nov. 18th but our impression that it was just getting under way and probably would have been even better the week after.
