I went out hog hunting for a few days too. I almost had an opportunity on this nice boar, but I could not get as close as I needed. I was able to watch him for 30 minutes feeding between 20-30 yards. Then he turned and walked out of my life forever. It sure was fun, and 2 guys in the group were rifle hunting so we had camp meat and ground up 50 pounds of meat into sausage.

Here’s a pic of the “one that got away”.

Mmmm…sausage! Sounds like a great time. Was this in Northern Cali?

We don’t have hogs where I live in PA but it seems like a great way to enjoy a January day outdoors. 30 minutes watching hogs feed at 20 – 30 yards….. you must of played the wind perfect! From the picture it looks like you ran out of cover. 50 lbs of sausage sounds delicious.

                Steve,

Yep, exactly. Wind was right. But he was out in the open, and as he fed kept turning so he was never facing away from me for very long. Rather than spook him while trying to crawl in on my belly, I elected to just watch and see if he fed closer to me on his own. Over the years, I’ve tried to change from rushing in to stalk an animal, and instead, when I get close to an animal, watch it and wait for it to move into range. This approach allows me to watch more natural behavior and less rear ends running away!

Preston, Sounds like a good approach to stalking in open country. Maybe next time the hogs will be more cooperative.
