So last weekend my buddy and found a great little spot, lots of bucks around. We posted up and after a few hours we were fortunate that nothing came near. As we were leaving we realized that what we had just done was against the regs in CA. Thus, illegal.
Our general tactic is spot and stalk but the heat was getting to me and I got lazy. At the time, neither of us thought we were doing something wrong.
We were lucky that no one else was in the area to make a report. I consider both of us to be considerate, law abiding, ethical hunters who can set a good example to both hunters and nonhunters.
Its been gnawing at me all week that we made such a lazy decision that could have ended our season.
Im wondering if anyone else out there has made honest mistakes out there and learned from it. Im sure there are some of us that have never been in a similar situation, but some may have.

Not an archery screw-up but instructive nonetheless, I think:
Second day of our firearms deer season a few years back, I switched location from my first-day spot near my home to another one some twenty miles north of here. I was ready and willing to shoot any adult deer that offered itself, as both antlered and antlerless deer were permissible the first two days.
Only after coming home empty-handed that second day did I remember that in moving locations, I had crossed into an adjacent wildlife management unit that now allowed antlerless deer hunting only on the first day. There had been a regulation change that year for the unit in question. I knew about it full well, but it had slipped my mind for what could have been one fateful and regrettable day. 😳

We were too close to a water source. Only water sources of a certain size are open to ambush hunting. This one was not large enough.

I once discovered I was mistakenly in Wyoming. Luckily I hadn’t killed anything.

Yes, I read the TOTAL Regs {twice} every year now in any state I intend to hunt! especially in CA- AS compared to Utah. It changes a lot due to the politics of the state [any] Govt–

We all make mistakes. Beyond that I see three categories: First are those who not only make excuses to others, but manage to excuse themselves and feel blameless for their mistakes and even overt actions. These people learn nothing and know nothing. Second are folks who honestly regret their mistakes but fail to learn and keep making the same and similar mistakes. Third are folks who admit their errors to themselves and “dwell on them” until an inner resolution is reached. These hunters learn from their mistakes and make it a priority not to make them again. If not overworked, the human conscience is a wonderful thing.

Can you post what reg you are quoting? I have never heard of a water source reg, and cannot find it in any of the regs. There are baiting regs but in the definition of baiting it does not mention water at all.
Is it specific to the area you hunt?

Section 730 of the hunting regs says it’s illegal to camp or otherwise occupy any known wildlife watering hole, whether man-made or naturally occurring, for any period longer than 30 minutes
Sorry it took so long. Forgot about this post
