Looking for some broadhead help

I’m a big believer in sharpening my own broadheads but I will be hunting with a buddy for elk this fall who is relatively new to big game hunting with a bow. He will be shooting a compound and probably some type of carbon shafts. I’ve got him convinced that speed isn’t everything and he’s looking at heavier, stiffer shafts. I’d like to be able to recommend a presharpened 150+ grain broadhead due to the potential of high winds in the area we are hunting. I don’t want to suggest something that might wind plane so I think the fixed blade insert type is the route to go for him. Any suggestions?

I will predicate this by saying – I have a tendency to “touch up” all my broadheads from the initial purchase [ if necessary] and of course with use. But these Broadheads listed, come very sharp! I have purchased all within the last year — so this is personal experience.

Tuffheads 225 gr —

Abowyer Brown bear 175 gr

Zephyr Scirocco 150 gr [ w Bleeder ]{ a “modern” rendition of the Bear Razorhead}.

Check out the new werewolf broadheads by Eclipse . . .

I was a stickler for Magnus stingers . . . but my only complaint was that they were too fragile/thin . . . all the broadheads look the same after they are photographed, but these things are built like a tank, Blake makes a good product . . . after holding those broadheads in my hands I’m switching over 😀

+1 on the Eclipse heads and they will fly well at 270fps if his arrow is spined right.

In my opinion, probably the best screw-on, factory sharpened, 150 grain head is the Muzzy 145 4 blade. I’m pretty sure they are still being made. They were the absolute best replaceable blade head out there when I shot them from my wheel bow. I still have a bunch of them and may use them some day too but for now I shoot a 2 blade COC glue on head. I would still bet money on a Muzzy 145.

Wow – nice work! I wish more compound guys would pay attention to more of the equation than sheer speed with ridiculously light arrows!

Lots of great suggestions here. I’d also throw VPA Terminators into the hat. Very tough, devastating broadhead.

Dennis — My personal top head right now is the Tuffhead, either 225 or 300 — I put a 225 plumb through a bull from a 54# longbow last fall. But it’s a glue-on so your friend would have to add an adapter, at least 75 grains for 300 total, which I can’t imagine any pulley shooter going along with. So I would agree with Scout on the 175 Brown Bear. Three years ago I killed an elk with one and it was still sharp after. And they are screw-in so a 175 is a 175. Since we’re talking big speed here, I’d definitely go with a long narrow head and avoid all fatties. Nor would I, personally, use a 4-blade on elk for fear of striking bone, esp. ribs going in, and loosing way too much horsepower. Whatever, and whatever it’s shot with, for elk it needs to be tough tough tough. IMHO

Sorry I didn’t see this thread sooner. I don’t know if you’re still looking for suggestions, but right off the top of my head I can think of two heads that would fit the bill for your friend. The first would be the Muzzy Phantoms, and the second would be Chris’ idea to try the new heads by Eclipse. I haven’t seen those new heads myself, but with their exceptional reputation for quality, I wouldn’t be the least bit leery of using anything they produce.
