The speed you get from a bow is dependent on several factors beyond the bows natural potential:

Draw length, brace height, arrow weight, arrow material, arrow spine, and form to name a few.

Your definition of a longbow will also come into play. Most folks consider a hybrid bow to be a longbow.

That said, I shoot a home made string follow American Semi Longbow these days. It’s 58 lbs and shoots a 520 grain wood arrow 175 fps at my draw length of 27.5 inches.

Way more important than how fast the arrow goes, is where it ends up exactly. And for that I cannot be much help. I have to go scratching in the duff for my arrows now 😳 🙄 😀

I don’t much care how fast they go….and the dead animals don’t seem to care either:lol:

The question is what is the speed of your arrows

If this does not matter to you,why do you answer ?

and especially side of the question ?:twisted::twisted:

Just trying to point out that speed is not the be all and end all that some get wrapped up with. If a few fps mattered to me that much, I’d probably be shooting a compound.

My cedars are fast. Fast enough.

Depends on whether I am walking (slow) or driving in the car.

Seriously: I think they are fast enough, if they kill. I Agree that it is more important to worry about hitting what I’m shooting at, and finding the arrows that miss. How fast doe’s an arrow have to be to kill a stump anyway?

I can tell you from vast and repeated personal experience that it doesn’t matter how fast your arrows are, them stumps can still duck and dodge the best placed shot 😳 😈 🙄

It is even worse when there are a couple feet of snow for the arrow to get lost in….

And then there’s the big mossy rocks that pretend they’re stumps. I bullseye those every time! Dwc

                                Reminds me of a story….

A couple years ago I was roving through the woods. I saw a nice leaf up high on the bank on the other side of the creek. Perfect target. I pulled an arrow from my back quiver and was beginning my draw when I heard something off to my left.

I let down and looked… Opossum! I immediately clicked the blunt arrow off my string and drew a broadhead from my quiver. Put it on, drew and shot that ‘possum as he crossed the creek 20 yards away. Perfect shot!

I was feeling like the great Howard Hill himself!

Before I went to retrieve my arrow from that chicken killer, I decided to go ahead and shoot that leaf I was working on before.

I picked up the blunt arrow, nocked it to the string, drew and shot. BAM! That leaf turned out to be a rock. My nice $15.00 carbon arrow / brass insert / blunt arrow was now dust in the wind.

How quickly our fortunes fall, taking our spirits with them 😳 😥

That’s a great story! You hit perfect on both of those shots!!!

                                    My 68″ D/R longbow 52.03 lbs @ 28″

Here’s the Force Draw curve and chrono data for the bow. 525 gr arrow at 182 fps at 28″ 52.03lbs at 28″

Here are some more numbers from different arrow weights. 52.03 lbs @ 28″

                                    672 gr arrow @ 161 fps

                                    476 gr arrow @ 189 fps

                                    388 gr arrow @ 203 fps

                                    6gr/lb at 30″ = 225fps

those are some good numbers! A longbow with a 10 inch brace height? Sounds strange to me. That Draw force curve looks like a recurve curve to me.

Those hybrids sure look good on paper don’t they? Fast bows and fast women, every time I go chasen’ after one, I get slapped 😳

Steve the 9.5 inches is measured from the back of the riser so the fd curve uses amo measurements. The actual brace height is 7.75 inches which is about as low as it can be on a 68 inch bow. I built the riser out of angle iron so I could use a set of limbs that came in too heavy. So the riser is 21″ end to end and has 17 degree limb pad angles. I had to do that to get the weight down tos 52lbs. They were 67lbs on my regular riser after I had narrowed them down as much as I could. The limbs on my regular riser shot a 675gr arrow drawn to 28″ at 188 fps but just killed my shoulder, just way too much weight.
