        OK, here’s aquestion…
I’ve read in various forums (Fora?) about a dab of loc-tite on single bevel (left hand) broadheads – I’m shooting Ashby’s – to keep them from backing out…Now I’m playing with arrows….How in the hell do you get them off :!:

I put just a drop and they are attached to HIT insert MFX Classics….appreciate any thoughts….>>>–> John

John, I learned that same hard lesson also! Only I used some stuff sold expressly for that purpose — probably Loc-Tite repackaged. On a side note, the guy who invented Loc-Tite and that stuff you put on car upholstery to fresh it up, is retired near here and a very active life member of BHA; great guy. Best leave it for nuts and bolts, as intended. I shoot left bevels and have never had a problem with them backing out. Brass is pretty soft and if you screw the head down real snug they seem to stay just fine. Sorry I can’t help you on getting them out. And an Ashby head is way too expensive to just throw away. Maybe you can use a heat gun to heat the insert out of the shaft, then put the insert in a vice, pad the head and use Vice Grips to break the seal. Let us know …

Heat should loosen the loc-tite so you can unscrew the head from the arrow.

Like Dave said, the heads don’t come loose too often. But if you want some assurance, there is a removable version of loc-tite that won’t cause you these problems.

I think it is blue. And the permanent version is red.

              Dave and Steve,

Thank you both for your help. I guess in a fit of, we’ll call it “ingenuity”( :?::!: ) I decided that a little old fashioned Gorilla technique might work….SOOO I grabbed one of those rubber sticky grip things used for jar lids etc and grabbed my MFX mid-shaft then wrapped the broadhead in a thick towel wrapped in a tanned deerhide (better grip than towel) and went for it…and yes, I broke the bond.

Exactly as you say Steve – a bit of research later (little bit of cursing also aprinkled in) revealed that if you use the BLUE Loc-Tite (which I did) it is meant to be removable (with force – says Loc-Tite folks). Had I used the RED version, very different situation as that is considered a permanent bond. Only heat can SOMETIMES break the bond. Found out (also hard way) that the HIT Insert glue provided with MFX shafts not meant to be removed (w heat or anything else 👿 )

You know, I’ve read in various places about gluing left bevel heads. I do not have a lot of trad experience, and hope to get my first Trad Killed critter this season, but have never had a problem in my practice sessions with bheads backing out.

I’ve always tightened them (Ashby’s) down pretty well and so far so good. I got into gluing in last week or so as Wednesday 19th buddy of mine and I have hired a float plane (with a pilot ❗ ) to drop us deep into the Adirondacks and chase bucks and bears around…last thing I wanted was broadheads backing out in middle of no-place 😯 Of course I have plenty of Ashby’s to bring (Thanks Dave 8) )with me. Hopefully they stay in shafts they are intended to be in, piercing the critters they are intended to pierce, and let me pick them up, re-sharpen, and do it again :!::!::D

              Be well my friends

In the future if you want to prevent heads and points from backing out when using LW feathers, try rubbing the threads of the point or head with bees wax. I’ve been using it for years and have never had problems with fieldpoints or broadheads coming loose.

                  Thank you Troy ❗

That’s a great idea.:!::idea: You’re always there to point me (check that, all of us) in not just the right direction, but one perhaps, through lack of experience etc, I/we never thought of :)

I have to second Troys advice. When using aluminum I put string wax on the point threads and they don’t work loose. They are a lot easier to take off also.

The wax idea sounds good and less messy. I’ve been putting a tiny drop of hot glue on the end of the male thread and that works, too. You don’t have to heat it to turn it. dwc

I used to use bees wax but now I use blue loctite. BUT I use just a smidge (like half a drop) as a little goes a long way. I dont have any issues getting them off when I need to.

I used to have problems with aluminium BH adpts goulding to the aluminium insert. I started using bees wax to prevent this and found that it also helped prevent points from coming loose.
