That set up is VERY close to exactly my set up two years ago.

Expect pass throughs. I about lost one arrow looking for it in a soybean field after it went through a doe, from a shot I got sitting on a bucket.

Shooting a bit more this year, only because that is the weight of the bow that I was looking for. I dont have near the FOC you do, but plenty IMO. Sticking with my woodies here.

                      ok, Gotta ask.

                      NO ONE has photos? 😆

                      More later.

Dang……..that one is a screamer! and one LONG DRAW……wheew. Id be somewhere behind my head at 32 inches, lol.

I’ve fallen in love with heavy arrows but will openly admit that a 500 grain arrow properly placed (at about any speed, let alone at yours!) will kill any whitetail that ever walked the earth. (and many other things). Ive done it myself for decades as have literally thousands of others. Weigh some “old” cedars you come accross sometime. (back when no one weighed em!)

Super longer range set up there, J! Knowing your expertise in set ups……I’d expect passthroughs from your shots……any day.

Thanks for sharing within this thread. KEEP EM COMING GANG!

Love seeing (hint hint) setups that are working for others. Praise the Lord we are not all clones……this would be one BORING thread! Mine is coming. Fear not…..and wordy. (and will HAVE PHOTOS! )

It’s really beyond overkill for whitetails. If my paternal grandfather was still alive he’d probably smack me on the head and ask, “Why the heck are you shooting so much poundage?”. Year after year he shot through whitetails with mid-400-grain arrows with three-blade heads out of a bow pulling 42# @ 26″.

My only answer would be that I also like to hunt things bigger than whitetails and want to stay with one setup for everything. If I can get passthroughs on elk and moose (done both), I’m not the least bit concerned about putting an arrow in the dirt on the other side of a whitetail deer.

Looks like I’ll be the first to post pics.
Bow is a recurve of my design. 62″ 55#@29″, I stippled the grip to help prevent slipping when I sweat or while wearing cotton gloves
Arrows are Victory VMaxx HV 300 with brass inserts and 3″ of 2117 aluminium footing.
Broadhead is 190 grizzly with 125gr steel adpt.
Total arrow weight is 680gr, UEFOC 32.46%
Fletching will be switched from the 3″ parabolic to 2-1/2″ A&A
                            I use a Cavalier Tab

I missed a big Mi. buck last year with a less than the best set up (still only a few years into this) – waah! This year I hope to poke him in the ribs with this:)

I got a Super Shrew 50# @ 28″ last year but I don’t like the arrows I have made up for it. Too light. Turned out to be 450 gr total weight. I’ll wait and make up something better than those for hunting.
So in the mean time I’m shooting my Volcano 45# @ 28″ Hickory shafts with 110 gr Zwickeys, 500 gr total weight.
Should be OK inside 20 yards. Schrade 152 and Schrade 171UH

This will be my first season using traditional equiptment, have been practicing for almost 2 years off and on but the last few months i’ve really gotten into it. Gonna be hunting east Texas on state land. People always talk about how Texas has no public land, when in fact there is over 1 million acres open to the public. If your gun hunting you might as well forget it tough, WAY WAY TOO MANY PEOPLE! But there’s lots of archery only areas that have good numbers and quality Deer and TONS of hogs, with very low numbers of bowhunters. Just thought id end the public land/Texas myth… Happy Hunting!

Got a couple setups, one still being tweaked.
                                      1) Bear Kodiak Hunter, 45# with GT 5575, 31″ long with 2″ 2219 aluminium footing and 125 gn Eclipse and 75 grain adapters.

                                      2) Rawhide backed ERC D bow I just finished. 53 @ 28 with full length tapered Sitka Spruce shafts and 145 gn Eclipse heads. This is still getting tweaked a bit, to include work on a set of rivercane shafts for it. I really like it. I believe that is might, due to the higher draw weight and light physical weight of the cedar, shoot a bit harder than my recurve does.

Finished arrow weights between both setups are similar. The carbon shafts have much higher FOC, though the woodies aren’t bad by any means. Both will work just fine on Arkansas deer and squirrell as long as I put them in the right spot.

Miles……..I can hear my joints creaking just thinking about shooting your bow!! 😆

Just got another “critter gitter” today but one like Ive had so dont blast me too hard for “a new bow just before season”.

I’ve got to get work out of the way and get stuff around to post my crew. (too fickle to stay with one setup ALL season…..lol)

Make it yourself? Let’s see a pic of the entire knife if you don’t mind. Looks like my kind of hunting knife, with a handle at least as large as the blade for a good solid grip to provide max torque.

I hope I’m not snatching the thread, as the topic is fall hunting set-up, and knives are a part of that. 🙂

Not trying to hi-jack the thread, to answer Dave’s question, the knife is a Schrade Uncle Henry 171UH. They never were as popular as some of the lighter weight Schrade knives but I like it with its own honing stone it is somewhat utilitarian but is a nice looking knife with some heft to it. Sadly, the new ones available are made in China now but USA made models can be found on e-bay and some knife forums. I found mine in a vintage jewelry shop in Virginia.

The gut hook was added by the previous owner which diminishes the collectability of the knife but I wanted it to use so I don’t mind it.

I’d say the color is perfect for hunting. It shoots very well. There is no shelf. The arrow rest is my hand. The handle is narrowed but tillered to bend slightly. The blunt tipped arrow on the left is made from a hazlenut shoot. It is my squirrel arrow. The blunt is actually a shell casing with a small piece of metal epoxied in a groove cut with a hack saw. The wild rose hunting arrow is tipped with a trade point I made from metal left by my Dad…Lord rest him. The point is put on with pine pitch and tied on with sinew coated with hide glue. One of the feathers is hand ground from a wild turkey feather while the hens are cut from store bought feathers. The feathers are cut in my style. The fletching was put on with a jig using hide glue but reinforced with sinew set in hide glue. The self nocked arrow is waterproofed with deer fat from a deer I killed a few years ago. Note the plains quiver which has a couple of pouches storing first aid kit, snacks and a flashlight. There are 2 hand planed white pine arrows in my quiver. One is tipped with a blunt and the other is tipped with a Zwicky. I made the neck knife a few years ago from the same metal as the trade point. It’s handy. Jawge
