We are heading out soon and in the final prep for our trip. We are looking for a good base camp that is reasonably close to some good hunting. I figure that we will be doing a lot of climbing ridges and glassing but I was also told to drive the roads and check every wash for tracks and then follow them up the washes. Anything that anyone could provide would be great. Thanks in advance.

Maybe not the advice you want, but…

            Take pictures.

            Have Fun.

Don’t forget the Dickle. George Dickle that is 😀

I have very very little experience to share. All I know is those washes fill up cast when it rains, but you provably got that figured out. I look forward to the stories and photos. Have a blast! Dwd

Yep spent some time in that type of country–“seek the high ground at night and live to see the morning light” an ole gunny.

Things I’m continuing to ponder in preparation for this trip:

                        Rye or straight bourbon?

                        .38 or .44?

                        Stetson or Stormy?

Should I stop at my favorite hole in the wall in south Tucson and get a big pot of menudo for the first morning in camp?

I’m carrying my 1911 .45. It’s not nearly as light as my .40, nor does it hold as much ammo, but I am much more accurate with it. I feel pretty confident it will hold its own against charging javelina and shootouts with bandejos.

I’ll also be bringing a good bit of oat soda (you can’t stay too hydrated in the desert) and maybe a decent bottle of scotch or two.

Bout to sharpen all my broad heads and do some more cyber research, as well as make my lists (daypack, camp gear, etc)

Be sure ya got TWEEZERS or Duct tape. A bunny squealer helps ( sounds just like a baby Javie or one in distress. They worked well in TX. Also works on cats and yotes……

Have fun guys! I am jealous.

Smith, I would take a bottle of Bullet bourbon. It is a good straight if you never had it.

I do not mean to sound naive, but are javelin mean? If so I would take my 357 for a side arm.

As for the hat…I am not an expert there.

From the videos I have seen they sure can be!!

But the main reason for a sidearm are the two legged variety of coyotes.

I think a jug of tequila would be the drink of the day down in that country. Double the worm:D Might be a good bartering tool.

Haha…this thread gave me a good chuckle this morning – thanks, folks.

Vance – a good set of tweezers is always in my first aid kit, but I’ve probably used them more on my southwest trips than anywhere else in the country!

Unfortunately Ralph, I had to swear off tequila a long time ago, after extensive ‘trial and error.’ 😉 I’m strictly a whiskey guy now.

Wojo – Bulleit is one of my “go to” whiskeys for sure. Although theses days I’m liking the Bulleit Rye even more. Sazerac makes a really nice rye as well…

Put the Meatheads on the KME yesterday and they are ridiculously sharp now. I love that sharpener.

                                                1) Either Rye or Bourbon will work, but lean toward bourbon

                                                2) .44

                                                3) Stormy

                                                4) Yes on the Menudo

                                                5) Bird Dog

Good to know for next year, compadre. 😉

                                                    2) .44

Yeah, it’s a bit of a beast to lug around, but definitely reassuring. Then again I just picked up a very light .38+P that is a joy to carry. Of course, I’ll probably end up packing both.

                                                    3) Stormy

Aye. Again, I’ll probably pack both. The beauty of car camping.

                                                    4) Yes on the Menudo.

The definition of “soul food” in my book.

                                                    5) Bird Dog

Yeah, I seriously debated this, as I’ve hunted quail in the area before and it can be quite good. But I think I might be spreading myself too thin. And, my dog needs daily vigorous excercise. Telling him to hang out while I go hunt javis for the day would not go over well. So I think I’m going to forego it this time. Besides, I’ve got a chukar hunt in western ID the weekend after I get back.

I’ve been known to enjoy vodka with club soda as well. Really can’t do much with whiskey except Scotch and Irish. Maybe Bruce will turn me.

I really hope you tote those sidearms around for nothing but you know the old adage. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. And my favorite by my old friend A. Outlaw: “I’d rather get caught with it than get caught without it.”

Deer, quail, beautiful scenery, and fellowship are all in abundance but these javis have been ghosts so far. If anybody has any recent info on javis in 34a, post it up. Please!!!
