Just finished reading the excellent article by Don Thomas in the June/July ’15 issue titled “One Hundred Days – Preparing for an extended wilderness backpack hunt.” It’s chock full of sound advice on conditioning, particularly for those of us who remember the long-ago days before devices that logged miles and heartbeats (and automatically dialed the local rescue squad when the lack of the latter was detected …)

I’m off to the local hill with my loaded backpack for some training and turkey scouting – thanks for the inspiring reminder, Don!

Go get ’em, eld. I’ve never figured out how a digital device on your wrist is supposed to help you get up the mountain. Don

And even more importantly, build knee and ankle joints for the trip back down, something many a runner has discovered to his or her dismay.

I just read that article. Good, solid advice, whether planning a back country hunt or preparing to keep up with the boy scouts. Thanks for a good read. Best of luck on your hunt..dwc

The new “Backcountry” feature of the mag does more than just dispence practical advice, in my opinion – it helps keep the flame flickering for those of us who yearn to wander off into big, truly wild country with a simple bow in hand, whether that yearning is out our back door, or a distant dream for that “hunt of a lifetime.” Without that yearning, I believe some important part of our hunter-soul would be lost.

                  Don

Great article, sound advice. I’m 3 weeks into the walk up and down the ski mountain slopes pack weight at 20lbs. Turkey hunting on “John’s Farm” in the mornings with waist belt. I keep asking myself–wait a minute you retired from humping loads up and down:shock: but this time its different.:D

Keep up the great work at Trad Bow.

Bruce your comment is right on–never stop dreaming.

Well said! Some of us will never go on that “hunt of a lifetime” in some far-off place, but the yearning to wander in the local woods with a simple bow in hand is certainly part of my soul, as I’m sure it is with others.

That was a good article for sure. I’ve gotten deconditioned over the last year since we had the baby and have recently started getting my act together. I’m lucky enough to have “hunts of a lifetime” every year about 8 miles from my house but there’s not a single flat stretch of country up there. If you aren’t laboring up a slope, it’s generally because you’re falling down it.

I read other people’s medical records all day, and as I work my way through my 40’s, I’m really starting to realize how much difference the choices we make affect our quality of life.

Thanks for the great article Don. I can now use this as proof to the wife that I am not to old for that kind of stuff.:D
