This evening I missed a small 7 point buck on my first archery whitetail hunt in over 6 years. I’m not ashamed, or embarrassed. I definitely choked, and the arrow didn’t even make it all the way to the deer. Now I can’t wait to go again tomorrow, maybe I’ll miss again!

Don’t feel so bad Steve, I missed two 4×4’s last Thursday morning, each at 15 yards. One a foot and a half high over the sholdiers, the other one a half inch high over shoulder. I’ve killed 63 deer with a recurve, and for me it is never over or any easier until there on the ground. Better luck with your next shot!

When I go fishing with a leader too light, and loose a fish I keep saying “Better to have hooked, and lost, than never hooked at all.” Never would have hooked him on a stronger leader…
Great that you actually had a shot at a deer. Had to do a lot of things right to get there.

I’d rather miss with a bow than connect with a gun. Rifle season started here in Missouri today. It is making me sad. I was having so much fun bowhunting. That being said, I will probably harvest a deer with a rifle sometime this week; but it won’t feel right.

I missed a five yard shot on a little six point next to the last day of early archery here in PA. Never came to full draw.. The string just slipped off my fingers and the arrow sailed right over his back.. He trotted off to about 12 yds, trying to figure out what had happened while I tried to dig out another arrow from my quiver.. He finally just ambled off..
My heart was going like a jackhammer during that whole time…lol

Saturday I had one of those close encounters…
Doing the whitetail 2 step, I came to a brier patch that would have stopped brier rabbit. While I was trying to figure what way to go I saw brown through a opening in the tangle. I froze and heard, glimpsed at least 2 (I think 4 deer) amble by within 20 feet (not yards feet). All I could do is stand there frozen thinking “What can I do? What can I do?” All I could do is watch brown go by, with my heart racing. Notice I said “amble” by, no snorts, no crashing thru the underbrush waving white flags, they didn’t know I was there.
No venison on the table, but I can say that:
I CAN do the whitetail two step. If they had seen me or heard me, they would have bolted.
I don’t stink. If they had smelled me…
There ARE deer there. I’ve seen scrapes, droppings, and rubs all over, but actually seeing brown trumps all of that.
I’m thinking the rest is just luck, and the more time I spend out there the more likely I am to get a shot. With that said, I’m running out of time.
Didn’t get the chance to launch an arrow, but as I made my way out of the woods that evening, I was snickering.

Grumpy, great story. Great accomplishment. I was just a few feet away from a couple of big doe some years ago hunting with my flinter. Didn’t shoot because my buddy was somewhere through the swamp on the other side of them. I just got such pleasure of being so close on their level. Your hunt was a raging success in my book. Congratulations for the reward of your persistence. Best, dwc

Way to go Grumpy. Getting that close is a real accomplishment. My season ended yesterday with very little success. I had 3 does within 20 yards of my brush blind but couldn’t shoot because I am in a buck only zone.
A couple weeks ago I had a spike go by at 15 yards and got the bow half drawn when he went behind a tree and disappeared.
But shooting one doesn’t necessarily make my season. I am happy to be out there playing the game and getting close provides a great sense of satisfaction. I’ll have to stick to eating beef this year.
