I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks. I am only a month ot of being 61. I have been hunting with bows exclusively since ’71.

Today I made my first ever bow string. A good hunting buddy of mine sat down with me and we worked it through. After that we sat down and built 11 more strings for some bows we use for kids shooting classes.

These were all flemish twist. After today I have to wonder why I thought you had to have a special talent to do this. This is not any harder than building arrows I have seen a lot of tutorials on string making but could not get it right. I always learned best by doing with someone knowledgable to coach me.

I guess what I’m trying to say is if you don’t know how, get then find someone to teach you.

Congrats Polar Bear. Making my own strings is a goal of mine to, but I hope I figure it out before I turn 61 .

Congratulations, I always thought I was quite competent with string until I tried to make a bowstring everyone turned out like a birds nest, then with a few pointers by folks from here problem solved, its a great skill to have.

I don’t know what others do but I use a double constrictor knot for knocking points, good illustration on Wikapedia if anyone’s interested.

Way to go!!! I’m 66 and I’ve only been making strings, flemish twist, for a couple of years now. I made a jig and made endless strings about 30 yrs. ago but that was in my other stage of archery life. I have more strings laying around now :)) than is necessary but ya neva, neva know! Who can guess where times be taking us. A bow without a string is pretty much just a walking stick or a funky spear.
I learned from a link in a primitive archer site and went from there. I don’t use a jig and my strings may not be as tapered looking as some but they work just fine and those that I’ve given away or traded off have seemed to make the recipients happy. Like you implied, not as hard as it looks to be.
