I am headed to Kauai to hike the Nepali coast this summer. Has anyone hunted this area? I am hoping to pack my bow along and spend a couple of afternoons hunting!

There was an article in TBM a couple years ago about hunting on Kaui – I’ll see if I can dig up what issue it was in when I get home.
You might also want to check out Ryan Sanpei’s site:
He gets after it on the Islands.
Hawaii is definitely on my dream list right now…

I have done a lot of hunting in Hawaii, but not on Kaui. Each of the major islands is quite different, so much of what I know won’t be of any specific help. However, I can tell you that unless the regs have changed, you will need to be able to produce a hunter ed certificate (NOT bowhunter ed) to get a license. You had best start working on that now. Once you are in the HI system, it is best to get your license on line, which is easy now. I also know that the magazine has run at least two pieces on hunting Kaui in the last decade. I am at our Alaska place right now with terrible Internet (the forum will be lucky to get this) but I bet our beloved Webmother can help out with the index. Best, Don

I found one article about hunting on Kauai: Aug/Sep 08 Traditional Destinations, Kauai, The Garden Isle by Steve Hohensee. Unfortunately, I don’t have it in digital format. 😥 I can probably scan it tomorrow and post it here.

TBM Feb/Mar 2012 – “The Passing of a Friend.”
Good story of goat hunting on the Na Pali coast. Might not have all the nuts and bolts practical info you need, but it gives a good idea of the terrain and what’s involved.
I’d appreciate it if you share any other info about hunting on Kaui that you come across in preparation for your trip, and a trip report after. 😉

I hunted the big island a couple years ago. Shot a pig.
Don’s advice about putting in for your license early is key to being able to hunt. You may also want to get a 4-wheel drive vehicle. The roads on the public lands on the big island can’t be accessed without it. I expect that’s the same on the other islands.
The lava fields tear up boots bad.
The Natural Resources folks are getting real serious about eradicating all the non native species on the islands. So you may have a hard time finding something to shoot at, aside from pigs.
Have fun!!!! Chasing goats is a blast.

Thanks, Bruce! I missed that one, but it’s an excellent resource. Let’s see if I can post it here. If the text isn’t large enough to read, please email me for a pdf copy.

Thanks for the quick info! I will send more information along as I find it. I will also make sure I take good notes while there!
I did find this forum on the PBS: http://www.probowsociety.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=23
Lots of good information on all the Islands.
