Short introduction: My wife gave me a Browning Explorer I recurve (45#) about 1972 and I have dabbled with bow hunting off and on since…mostly off. With advancing age and the deepening thoughtfulness that comes with it, I am returning to the fold.
Double bypass surgery in early 2012 slowed me down a bit. To ease back into my bows (the 45# Browning, Howatt Hunter 50#, & Sky Rogue 55#), I bought a 35# Bear Montana. I call the Montana my “.22 LR practice bow.”
I have great hunting for antelope, deer, and elk within 45 minutes of my house and literally right next to our little cabin in the Snowies west of Laramie. Last fall I got in three afternoon deer hunts at the cabin. I am looking to get serious about deer and elk in 2013.
Latest observation: Progress with the 35# longbow has been gratifying but not amazing. But this weekend I strung the 50# recurve and shot a few arrows. Surprisingly I got some pretty good groups at 40 – 50 feet! I think I was trying too hard with the light bow, overextending my bow arm, etc. The 50# recurve may have provided enough resistence to maintain a better bow arm position and “push” through the release.
I am anxious to get outside and continue to investigate what’s really going on. At 1 degree F. this morning that will have to wait for now.
Blessings,
Dick

Congratulations on your recovery Dick! You live in an idyllic place, as many of us are stuck in the concrete jungle year around (although the Winter’s are something that I can do without). I hunt Idaho each year, returning to the same woods that I know and love.
Looking forward to hearing about your successes this Fall.
Best Regards,
George

Best of luck on the road to recovery. Sounds like your well on your way. Time, practice, and patience you’ll be shooting the 50’s just like you were before.

Dick,it sounds like you are on the right track to recovering your form and accuracy with your bows. I agree, that you’re in a prime location, so take full advantage of your locale and enjoy your hunts. Welcome to TBM and feel free to ask questions as they come up, because there aren’t much better forums than this.

Thanks for the replies.
I shot the 35# longbow today and I think I was correct about trying too hard. I concentrated on a comfortable draw and a moderate push with the bow arm on release and the accuracy was pretty good. I think previously I was trying to do too much work for the bow, over extending, etc.
The weather will only get better as Spring approaches and I can get more practice than the last couple of months.
