        Hello all,

I am brand new to this post and web site. I have been an arm chair Traditional Bowman for years. I say arm hair, because I have a great collection of Recurve and longbows which I don’t use near enough. I love the simple elegance of the natural bow. I do shoot a little around my backyard and have been out Climbing the hills of New Zealand with my bow looking for game and doing some stump shooting, but I haven’t really gotten into it as I would like. I do miss hunting from a tree stand at times (I am from the States originally).
Anyway, my question is, can anyone direct me to a web site or post that explains how to make bamboo arrows (simply)? Bow tackle is more expensive here, but there is plenty of bamboo stakes that you can buy at the gardening shops, so I thought I’d give it a try. I also have some plastic vanes. Do you think these would work if I glued them on the bamboo? It rains a lot here and keeping feathers dry is tough.

          Welcome to the site.

You are in luck! Jay Massey did an article a long time ago about River Cane, which is very similar to bamboo. The magazine has been long sold out, but it is available to Premium Members of this site. Here is the link to the Oct/Nov 93 issue.

As far as vanes, they do work on traditional bows if you have an elevated rest. I know there have been posts about this topic so use the forum Search function (right below “Traditional Bowhunter® Magazine Forums”) and look for the word vanes to see the discussions. Maybe some of the members here can chime in as well with ideas.
