we have eaten meat older than that, it was good, I would say as long as it is not freezer burnt, but I dont know how “good” it will be nutritionally? But as far as being good, and safe, I think so? I am sure that alot of other guys will pipe in and say . . . O no not past a year . . .

            Steve,
It could go either way. I’ve had meat that old that looked and tasted fine and I’ve had some that was freezer burned and could not be salvaged. I guess it depends on the packaging and how well it was trimmed before packaging. I usually thaw some out and check for looks and smell. If it looks good and smells good I get the pan hot and start sauteeing an onion and some garlic because we all know that good things begin with sauteeing an onion and some garlic!!

Thanks, Guy… yes it is wrapped in freezer paper from the butcher. So I guess I’ll just have to check it out first.

I’ve eaten quite a bit of two year old meat from the freezer, like Greatree says, as long as it’s not freezer burnt, and smells ok you should be good to go.

If you are afraid of it, thaw it out and boil for your dogs. My dogs are very important to me so a good steak would make them and me happy.:)

Occasionally mammoth show up in the melting ice. I understand that the folks that live in the area prize these finds for the bounty of meat. So a few years in the old chest freezer couldn’t make a bit of difference if it doesn’t get burned.

There is an episode of Northern Exposure that dealt with this subject. It’s a good thing to watch on these snowy cold days.

Now that I think about it, I think I’ll pull a mammoth…ooops I mean moose…, roast out of the freezer that’s been in there a few years and get my wife to do her magic with it for supper 😆
