Hey gang, I shoot a Carbon Express Heritage 250s out of my 58# Bama and 350s out of my 62# Bama. Both are weighed at my 30″ draw.
I’m trying to make some hunting arrows. I shot an aluminum last year. I’ve never hunted with a Carbon. My arrows are 31″ with a stock insert. I shoot both with a 125g field point and they fly great.
For those of you who have experience with these arrows – how heavy of a broadhead could they take?
I usually use a 125g broadhead on a 30g adapter or a 75g steel adapter with a 100g broadhead.

Have you tried a heavier BH to see how they fly yet? After I get my arrows that I just ordered Easton Legacy 2020’s which are at 31.5″ I will test them with starting with a 145 gr FP, then order the FP test kit from 3Rivers to see what they will bear for weight, because I want to use the heaviest BH that I can without disrupting arrow flight.
When I was using that other uh em modern bow, they told me that a 570 gr arrow wouldn’t fly well either, but the results proved differantly. I would post a picture here of that group but it also shows a non-traditional bow in the picture, so I won’t. That was my last hurrah with that bow, and it won’t be shot by me again 😆
Now onto traditional shooting.
Your CX Heritage 250’s weigh 341 gr and your 350’s weigh 372 gr as bare shafts. What is the total weight arrow that you want to shoot?

Yep, it is plenty.

I shot carbon express hertitage 250 arrows for 4 seasons. I used a 150 grain broadhead and the arrows flew well.
This year I decided to give the extreme FOC setup a try. So I worked up to 300 grains and a 50 grain insert. The arrows didn’t seem to fly perfectly every time. If I had a bad release they would take a long time to recover. So I went to 350’s to see if that would help. It didn’t.
So then I tried some gold tips. They are much lighter than the carbon express for the same spine range. So my gold tip arrows with 350 grains up front weight the same as my carbon express with 150 grains up front, about 620 grains total. And I have yet to see an arrow fly poorly.
I don’t have an explanation for what I saw other than that the carbon express arrows with an extra 150 grains was maybe flying too slowly for the feathers to be able to stabilize the arrow quickly. I don’t know. My bow pulls a little less than 60 lbs at my draw length.

Field points are cheap and we should all have an assortment just for experimentation. Just keep moving up the line — 145, 160, 190 etc. if possible — to see what happens. My el cheapo CE 45/70 shafts shoot flawlessly out of a 55# pound bow with up to 450 grains up front, head and insert, with standard 3×5″ feathers. In fact they shoot better with more weight up front. Same with woodies except the spine range is far narrower. dp

Thanks guys!!!
I know exactly what I’ll do. I rigged up a 350 with a 145g Zwickey Delta on a 30g adapter. That gives me 175g up front.
I’ll rig another up with the same setup only this time I’ll use a 75g adapter which will bring me to 220g up front.
I know the 250s will handle 150g up front but will try the same thing.
My issue is that I’ve only got about 10 yards to work with in my basement and there is no where to try broadheads out at my range. It is illegal to shoot within city limits even though my yard is completely enclosed.
FYI, Gold Tip 3555s are a funny arrow – much stiffer than they are spined in the charts. They shoot MUCH better out of my Dad’s 50# longbow than the 150s which weigh more – no matter the tip weight.

If 125-grains shoots great, that’s what I’d use. Tuning is paramount, and I’d personally never de-tune an arrow just to have some arbitrary number of grains out front.

I have several that I am trying on the BH Target.
Two differant Zwickey’s in 170 gr and 160 gr and two differant brand 125 gr broadheads by Magnus and Simmons.
I’m currently shooting a 145 gr FP, so I may be looking for some 145 gr or 150 gr broadheads myself. That would leave either Magnus, Woodsman or STOS Broadheads depending on a 2 blade or 3 blade broadhead that I choose.

A little bit of an update here. Cottonwood, this may help you out as you just bought my Cocobola bow – which shot the 250s.
I tried a Zwickey Delta 2-blade (the dual bevel model). 145g with a 30g adapter. 175g total. Those flew very well with the Heritage 250 cut at 31″ and 3-fletched with shield cuts. I even tried the head with a 75g steel adapter at 220g up front and it still shot good!
I took my deer with a 125g Ace last year at 155g total but was using a 2117 aluminum arrow.
The best possible combination for my other bow – the one that pulls a little more – was the 145g Delta with the 75g steel adapter. This seemed to be perfect with the Heritage 350.
I’ve got a new Bama Royal longbow coming though which will probably be 54# at my draw but a faster bow. I’ll start that one out with a 250 and the 175g setup.
Thanks!

LimbLover, thank you for the information. This is gonna be fun, and I’m so proud to finally own a Bama Bow, which will probably become a whole new addiction 🙄
What am I saying, these are beautiful bows that I just can not help but look at a lot.
And now I have a Cocobola Bama bow arriving next week. This is almost like expecting our next grand child that is due any time. The waiting, the anticipation of a new birth, and then to hold after the arrival.
Yep, I’m stoked.

One gives you love and hugs, and the other one is much better than a drug, and is much like having Lays Potatoe Chips, you just can’t have just one 🙄
