This is a topic not oft’ discussed here, with your autumnal hunting seasons and all, but I happen to have been using an American bit of hot weather kit for a couple years now that I’ve been really impressed by. It’s the LL Bean Tropicwear shirt.

I’ve used a couple of equivalents in the same period, they all have excellent ventilation and sun protection, but the LL Bean has a couple of features that make it my favourite. The first is that it is a bit more rugged than the other brands I’ve used without sacrificing any cooling. In the couple years I’ve had the LL Bean I’ve used it hiking, hunting, kayaking and at work and it’s never popped a seam or lost a button, been torn or anything else.

The other feature I really like are the little lanyard loops on the chest pockets. If ever I’m doing land navigation I like to keep my compass in my chest pocket so it’s convenient to shoot regular bearings from there and if you’ve got a Silva exped you can use it as your protractor as well. If it’s on a lanyard even a forgetful dunce (like yours truly) can’t accidentally leave it behind when you’ve stopped for a quick check nav.

Anyway, this shirt gets my tick of approval. I don’t know if it’s competitively priced in the US, but at $50 it’s on the cheap side for this type of shirt in Australia.

Thanks for the tip Jim. But here on the north side of the equator we are going for the 3 layer of wool right now. So keep sending that Merino wool up here.:D

Thanks the review. They make it in tall sizes too. 8)

I bet it would pair nicely with a MUK, or “Modern Utility Kilt.”
