I am using a board I bought and I use TJ’S book. My strings seem to come out fine but when I make 1 for curves they get so short to reach brace that I have a hard time stringing them . I am using a Selway stringer with the rubber stopper. I end up twisting the string a whole bunch which makes it short on the bow. I am tying a 58″ pearson hunter and trying to reach at least 8″ brace ?? any suggestions on a stringer with some kind of tip cups ? I am using the 58 mark on the board should I go shorter and maybe have less twist and still be able to string her ? Just frustrated.

As for stringers, the Thunderhorn stringer is my favorite. It doesn’t have a sewn pocket for the lower limb, and so it won’t come apart. And it seems to fit the limb tips better than any other I have tried.

As for strings, I am confused by your problem. At first you say that the string is so short to reach brace that you have a hard time stringing it, then you say that you have to twist it up too much. Not sure what the problem is. But here’s what I can tell you…

Too Short – sometimes the strings come out too short if you make the end loops too small. And if you make them too big, the string can come out a little long.

Too Long – If you don’t twist the string up good before putting it on the bow, it can slip when the bow is strung and then you have a string that is too long.

Keep at it. Making your own strings is a great way to enhance your bow. After you have made a dozen strings you will be an expert. And the cost savings will really add up over time. – just don’t let your friends know you can make strings, unless you like drinking their beer…

I put the string on the bow and I have a brace height say 6″ so I twist the string and try to get to 7 1/4 and I fight getting it strung up . I get these bows from the schools and try to start them at what I would think is a good brace height? I am not a recurve guy so maybe I am struggling with just stringing the bow ? I will ck out Thunderhorn ( he is just over the hill from me )

I was taught the starting brace height for recurves is 1/8 of the AMO length (measured from the string to the deepest part of the thumb grip). From there you adjust for arrow flight and noise.

I prefer the Selway type stringer as you can easily adjust the twist. With a dual cap type you have to remove the string loop after taking off the stringer. When tensioning the Selway keep your thumb on the rubber foot to make sure it stays far out on the tip. It will ride down otherwise, requiring a LOT more effort to bend the limbs.
