A FEW DAYS AGO I POSTED A THREAD WANTING SOME ADVICE ON HEAVIER HEADS TO INCREASE PENETRATION. I BOUGHT A FEILD POINT TEST KIT AND REALLY DIDNT NOTICE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN ARROW FLIGHT EXCEPT THE 200 GR AND 250GR SHOOTING SLIGHTLY LOW BUT NOTHING MAJOR. SO….. SINCE NO MAJOR CHANGE THAT I COULD NOTICE, SHOULD I JUST PICK SAY THE 200 GR.? IT DID INCREASE MY FOC FROM 9.5% TO 15%. BY THE LITTLE I KNOW ON FOC, THIS SHOULD INCREASE MY PENETRATION WHICH IS TRULY WHAT I WANTED TO START WITH, SO I MAY HAVE JUST ANSWERED MY OWN QUESTION. ANYTHING I WILL APPRECIATE.

Within 25 yds you probably will not see much difference in your arrow flight. Personally, I would opt for the heavier head provided you are getting good arrow flight.
What type of bow are you shooting? Are you using carbons? if you are using carbons you can really load the front up without a problem.
As an example, I’m shooting a 60″ 53@28 Griffin LB. I pull around 28.5. My arrows are CX Terminator Select 45/60 that are cut to 29-3/8, which gives me an arrow that is 29-7/8″ from nock groove to the top of the brass insert. I’m using:
160 gr point
125 gr steel adapter
100 gr brass insert
3-5.25″ Shield Cut feathersArrow weight is 678 gr
EFoC is 28%
12.5 GPPWith this arrow set-up, I can drop the point weight from 285 gr (678 gr arrow) to 235 gr (628 gr arrow 26% EFOC, 11.6 GPP) or way down with a 187 gr head (580 gr arrow and around 23-24% EFOC, 10.6 GPP)
The CX Term Selects have a deflection of .397.
Even though I can drop point weight arrow flight is still great, I just get a flatter shooting arrow and have to adjust for the up-down. However, I still maintain a heavy arrow set-up for this bow.

I’M SHOOTING A 60″ CHECKMATE RECURVE 60# @ 28″ WHICH IS CLOSE TO WHAT I PULL. IM USING EASTON ALUMINUM 2117 ARROWS. TO MATCH THE 200 GR POINT I WAS GOING TO GET A 125GR HEAD WITH A 75GR STEEL ADAPTER. I WILL EVENTUALLY MOVE TO CARBONS I JUST HAVE TO MANY ALUM’S MADE UP RIGHT NOW. THOUGHTS?

msarcher, Hi are you shooting bare shaft? Doing so should help with selecting wt up front. If it flies good bare shaft you can be sure it will fly good with feathers. Also need to compare fletched field pts with fletched broadheads.

msarcher please do not type in all caps, as that represents shouting and makes you post hard to read. 🙄
