My boy and I are heading out in a half hour or so for our annual long weekend trip to the mountains of VA for some hiking, stumping, beer drinking, camp firing, etc with a friend and his boy.

Been doing it since the boys were seven. Now they are seventeen. This will probably be the last year as next summer will be spent working and getting ready for college, and time spent with the old man just ain’t as fun as it used to be, I get the feeling…

Cool mountain air, venison burgers on the grill with home grown potatoes, tomatoes and cucumbers for supper. Home grown eggs, bacon, and home made biscuits for breakfast.

No electricity for 20 miles… Won’t be checking back till next week.

Sounds fun, have fun and do it all with care.

Share those moments with your children while you can. :D:D

Don’t worry they may leave, but will be back when the car breaks down.

If they are just hungry they want you to wire them money. When the car breaks down the tow truck shows up with the kid in the passenger seat and the car I back of it.

Don’t pick blackberries from the same patch as Yogi. Have fun and post some pics.

Here’s a few of the hiking pictures. No stumping pictures. Did some hiking in Grason Highlands State Park, and around the local hills too.

Shot a bunch around the cabin, but didn’t take the bows on any hikes. Beautiful Weather!

                                Steve,

Nice pictures! I’ll be heading up that way in a couple of weeks hopefully to do some backpacking and brookie fishing in the wilderness area. One of my favorite places to hunt/hike/fish/photograph!

Yea, it was a bitter sweet trip for me, as I figure it will be the last. But who knows. The boys still acted like boys, getting muddy from top to bottom.

They found a cave behind one of the waterfalls in the creek near the cabin. Came back for a flash light and lit out again without a word. After they didn’t show up for a half hour after dark, we packed a couple beers and went out looking for them.

Figured they’d be on the creek somewhere, so we followed that till we found cloths. No kids. Stood there wondering what was up when Miles heard something (I can’t hear s%^t as I’m deaf as a doornail). Wait, was that a kid? Sounds like it’s coming from underground. What?

A few loud Mad Dad shouts later, the boys appear through the sheet of water with big grins and a water logged flashlight.

Tall tails were told on the way back to the cabin about what they thought they saw in the cave. A few terse words were spoken in reply about tell’n us where they were off too. Growing up and all that…

All was forgiven a few beers and s’mores later.

That’s a story that’ll get easier with time. Happy ending to what would have been a good scare for me. Bet they’ll be more of those trips. best, dwc
