A buddy and I were on our way fishing Sunday morning. A lot of our dirt roads have steep banks, particularly on the hills where they have washed down over many years. This particular road had a 7 or 8 ft bank with a hogwire fence about 3 ft from the edge. As we were driving, we heard sticks breaking out the window and looked to see this spike trying to jump the fence to get away from the truck. Problem was, with such a narrow ledge, he couldn’t get the momentum and kept crashing into the fence. On his last attempt, he bounced off the fence and fell down the bank. Unlunky for him, two sweetgum saplings caught him….one behind his front legs and one in front of his hind legs. Hung out to dry! Poor thing would have slowly died as his feet couldn’t reach the ground to get any traction.
We took a quick photo and broke over the saplings. He fell into the ditch and got up shakily. Or maybe embarrassed. Anyway, he scampered off somewhat shakily with a look over his shoulder.
You never know what you’re going to run into.
We went on to catch a heap of fish, btw. 😀
