It wasn’t an easy decision to make with a few weeks left in the deer season here in Wisconsin but the early, heavy snows have made getting out to my spots extremely difficult. Time to let the deer rest and hunker down for what looks to be a very challenging winter. I had what I would call my most enjoyable season in years, hunting purely with traditional gear and on the ground. Although I was unsuccessful in harvesting anything I wouldn’t change a thing! I truly found everything I was hoping to when I made the switch. In the woods and among all of you fine folks here! Thanks for all the great subjects and insight throughout this season!

A very Merry Christmas to all of you and your loved ones!

        Dave.

Glad you are enjoying the journey…

ROAD TRIP!!! Arizona is just starting Bow season, over-the-counter tags for Coues or Muley, you’ll be hunting during the long rut and not up to your back pockets in snow.

If it’s to chilly in the Mountains, rest assured it’s warmer in the Valley and the pools always open…

We have been getting some goood snow storms the last few days in the Santa Ritas, So. Arizona…

A 20min. drive will take you from trailhead to pool with an adult beverage to ponder the next days hunt…

Really though… The coldest I’ve ever been while bow hunting is the Mt’s of So. Arizona, must be the “dry” cold…

Enjoyment with trad-gear is different for each person, I dont HAVE to shoot a Deer, but I do need to hunt. On my terms with a recurve. During the next month I will go through being cold, tired, hungery, and burned-out from climbing the Mt everyday before sun-rise. But also filled with a sense of wonder, excitment, and knowing everything can change in a minute…

It sounds like you have come to terms with your Enjoyment Factor also…

I’ll tell you what 1shot. I’ll be giving that some serious thought this year. I travel nationwide for work and I got plenty of free airline tickets, rental cars and hotel stays to make that a very doable late season adventure!!! Not to mention I’m already well equipped for pack style hunting! Hmmmm… I better jump on the weights a bit earlier this year! Next time I’m working down in AZ I’ll let ya know. we may have to get together for a brew or two!

                  I’m almost always avaliable for hunting(and a few brews)…

Alititude is more taxing for visitors to the Mountains, town is around 3200ft, and trailhead is at 5200ft, doesnt sound like much but I get little twinges of Alt sickness when I over do huntd that take me up high(headaches, dehydration)… Tanking-up with water, a couple of asprins before hand and it fixes me fine…

Sounds like an awesome adventure! Looking forward to picking your brain about hunting the southern mountains! My door is always open when you’re interested in hunting the north country!
