I’ve been reading how good these are now for camping. Anybody tried them yet? I guess my biggest question would be on how you can protect your hunting equipment since you can’t bring much inside with you

I have used them and like them a few things that come to mind:
Can be used on uneven, rocky or even boggy ground so long as you have good anchor points (not boggy ground when there are bugs about).
Get a good tarp that then allows you a dry open space to cook in etc.
Suspend the tarp under the ridge line so that water does not track down it and drip over you.
Most of your important gear can be stowed in the ridge of the tarp above you.
In warm weather air circulates freely keeping you cool, in cold weather you definitely need something to insulate the underside.
          Get a mozzie net.
It will take a few times before you get the tension right on the hammock to suit your weight and sleeping style.
          Happy camping, Mark.

Thanks. I know the one brand I was looking at has a large tarp/ rainfly that extends out. They show how you can sit on the side of the hammock and cook while the fly still covers you. I know they mention using some type of pad in cooler weaather for warmth. Since its usually cold up here for bow season, I wonder if it would be too cold and uncomfortabble.

I use a Henessey . I have froze to death and also cooked inside. It takes getting use too. I even set mine up in the back yard and sleep just to get use to it. In cold temps I use a space blanket with a foam pad and a good bag. I also wear socks and long undies. Very comfy . My wife and I also have ENO hammocks and carry them hiking and use them even when tent camping. You can get great info off of both web sites. They are light weight and easy to setup. I was using mine at archery shoots just to get use to them.

lol, ok I don’t quite know how to take that. Do you like them? Better than a tent? You said you froze in them. I take it that with the pad you stay warm?

yes I like mine a lot. Very comfy. One of the first time I used it was at a shoot in Idaho and it got down to the high 20’s and I was not prepared so the next night I wore my long undies and put a space blanket under my pad and woke up hotter than the hubs of hell since then I have been fine. Mine has a underside entry and it does take some getting use to. They are super light weight and you can hang them any where they can also be set up as a tent with a little bit of thinking. Ck out the web sites.I still use a tent – it just depends on what I am doing.

I’ve not used the covered units but I had some pocket hammocks I used in warm weather at the lake when fishing. When we got tired we just found a good spot with a breeze to spend the night. We’d be up at first light fishing again.

I have been looking at the hammocks at http://www.junglehammocks.com
The price is up there but may be worth it.

The Hennesseys are pretty decently priced
