My kids left for Kansas City to visit Gramma & Grampa for a few days. Took the opportunity to brush up on my shooting. Only two weeks till turkey season! Missed a few pigeons, hit one, and broke an arrow. (Dang!) Still, a good day.

Nice shot. Stinks to loose a arrow like that.

I’ve heard that pigeons, aka Rock Doves, were imported to N.A. originally because they’re good to eat. I’ve always wanted to try one. Let us know how you prepare it and how it tastes.

Huzzah, great way to spend the day! My grand dad used to shoot and eat pigeons quite often when my dad was a kid, but I don’t know how he cooked them. I’d be interested how you do it too 🙂

Ha! Once again!!! Chicken and rice casserole with pigeon substituting for chicken works well!

                Good shooting!

My brother is a certified executive chef and he serves squab for a high price. Squap is pigeon…to think people pay a lot for something we killed at will when we were young.

Great shot! I’d use any ol’ chicken recipe on that pigeon if it were in my kitchen.

Any recipe for doves will work perfectly too.

I’d pop the breasts out, dip in egg wash and flour, then fry. Make gravy with the drippings and serve with white rice.

I have a buddy who shoots them all the time.

My favorite is to take the breasts cut into thin strips and stir fry.

Squabs where I come from are flappers, kind of like pigeon veal.

Some of you guys with experience, what does pigeon taste like? Dove is OK but not a favorite here, but I’ve heard pigeon is better?? I always thought that in an urban survival situation, give me a good BB rifle and I could get by fine on pigeons and feral cats. I’m serious. 😆

Pigeons always good eating but specially after the grain harvest, the secret appears to be not to over cook it although I’m the last person to give advise on cooking.

Like brennanherr, says squabs are a delicacy and expensive if you can find them in a restaurant, BB gun is the way to go when they are getting adventurous sitting on the edge of the nest.

Not cat, damn things are full of worms, in an urban survival situation head for the petting zoo, anyone know what panda tastes like?

                            Mark.

I’ve often thought the same thing, Dave. If I were homeless I’d eat pigeon all the time. In the city they’ll let you walk right up to ’em without a worry. I’m going to slow roast this one. Stuff a thin slice of apple and a little parmesan and A-1 on both sides of the breastbone (maybe wrap it in bacon, dunno), bake at 200 degrees for at least an hour (until internal temp reaches 160). Slow roasted, I think pigeon tastes a lot like turkey dark meat. A slightly stronger flavor than that maybe.

Nice shooting Prowler. Wood pigeons make great eating over here. Nice fat birds that eat vegetation and grain. I generally just take the breasts and roast or casserole, etc. Nice gamey flavour somewhat like a poor man’s pheasant. But they might be a little different from your pigeons.

when I was a teenager my Mom would make meat pies with pigeon and squirrel. They were delicious !!

Nice shot by the way !

Went back out to my friend’s farm today to try for more pigeons. I tried to scare one out of its hiding spot with a slingshot & pebble…and wound up beaning it right in the noggin. He fell to the ground, gave two flip flops, and stopped at the toe of my boot. I figured my luck was up after that. Hopped in the pickup & split. Haha..

Country or farm pigeons are good but stay clear of any pigeon within 2-4 miles of a larger city or town, they taste off, kind of like eating bullheads or gadwall at the wrong time of year, they taste like what they eat. I cook mine just like a dove.
