I spent most of the day on my 100 acres with a man from our Department of Conservation. he’s writing me up a plan to improve deer, turkey and quail habitat. I don’t really farm the land, unless you count raising seedticks as livestock.

It was enlightening for me. He identified tons of species of plants, many I had no idea what they were and how we were going to get rid of them and replace them with native grasses and wildflowers. We also picked some likely spots for food plots, looked at what trees to get rid of and he made note that I will probably need a new pond in a few years. Our DoC will make us small ponds free of cost..but so far mine is holding water, even if it is 50 years old.

In talking I found out that he, like us, is a traditional bow hunter. he grew up not far from where I grew up. We talked about herbs that we gathered as kids, what you could eat and what you better not eat and I learned a lot about invasive species.

Next week I talk to the Forester who will actually mark the trees and give me an estimate so that I don’t get swindled by who ever I hire to harvest the trees.

I see your from Poplar Bluff. I live in Pocahontas, AR! Not far from you. Nice to know there are others in the area. You guys do any shoots up there anywhere? I had a similar consultation from the Arkansas Forestry department and AGFC. It’s wonderful that we have those resources available to us; its also a little overwhelming when considering the amount of work that needs to be done.

I haven’t seen any traditional shoots in our area. I will ask around.

I grew up in Doniphan, MO. We used to play ya’ll in basketball all the time. We went to Pokey as much as we did to the Bluff…
