is anyone findin mushrooms yet?its just ran alot today and it post to warm up the next this week to mid 70.im going to go look.
-
I’ve been picking them for about 2 weeks…. off my shitaki logs that is… 😀
I’ve seen a couple supposed expert mushroomers get sick / die. That’s a thrill I can live without. 😕
Too many look-alikes for this dumb bell. 😳

Steve — you should check out morels. There’s basically dumb-proof, common across the country and my personal favorite. Turkey season and morels are inseparable for many. Alas, we still have 2′ snow and I doubt I’ll be eating either this spring.
-
dave that is tough. I dont know how we will do here in the East either. At least with the turkeys, I dont know how they managed this brutal winter. But I think it might actually be a really good year for the morels. NOTHING compares to the excellent taste of them little guys. Although dad and I are what you call dumbies, lol. We cant seem to get a whole bunch, alot of guys around here will say they only found a few(2 gallons! ) when we feel rich it usually means we found a dozen:lol:

have y’all tried the puff balls? I’ve never tried them, but I hear they’re good if you cook them fresh. They’re the other “dumb proof” shroom.

Clay,
I tried puffballs for the first time last summer. They weren’t too bad. Kinda had a little different taste than most of the mushrooms I’ve had, but they were still pretty good. I don’t remember exactly how my wife cooked them. The ones I brought home were like 6-8″ in diameter. Found them in a pasture near where we were working one day.

I like puff balls fried get them small.
In France they have so many deaths from eating the ‘wrong’ mushrooms there is a facility that allows you to take a picture send it as a text and an expert will advise you if it’s safe to eat or not, I think the service is free as it’s cheaper than hospital.
Mark.

Morels are great fried up with breakfast!
Always remember that you can eat any mushroom once!

Hey Dave good tip of the week:D
-
The morels start appearing here in early April. Found 13 once in less than 100 yards along the crick that goes through my property. That was on April 4th 2001. Why do I remember that? The day before life changing surgery, or maybe I should say life saving. 😀
Wife said she saw 6 gobblers (probably jakes) fly into our yard on Monday while I was away.
-
hey Duncan what kind of surgery did u have?:?:
-
Turtle,
Had to have a lobe of lung removed due to cancer. It was not an agressive type which was good that it did not spread to other organs. I think I posted elsewhwere that it has been 10 years but I think I mis-counted and it is actually 9 years this year. Hiking up and down hills is tougher but I just have to take a slower pace these days, but that fits right in with bow hunting.

Duncan,
Where in North Carolina do you live? I’m in Charlotte. Been here my whole life except for six years in the Navy. I’m glad to hear that you have done so well since the surgery. -
I just talked to buddy yesterday that said they were up!!! I cant wait, I was thinkin of going to day, but the stream called for me first:lol:, so inbetween class I went fly fishing instead:D, Rough life huh?
Duncan I still love to hear your story, even though I have heard it before! It is definatly a story of hope!

JayT,
I’m in Hillsborough. I was just up in Charlotte a couple of weeks a go for SGA at the Charlotte Convention Ctr. I love Charlotte the folks there are great.

Thanks Chris,
It’s been kind of dry here. Don’t they come up better after a rain? I have not seen any yet but I saw a squirrel eating something down by the creek. Had to be a morel. They will eat the heck out of them.

Anybody got their recipe for morels or the puffballs?
I’ve known folks to eat the puffballs but I don’t know how to prepare them. I’m talking about the large ones that grow in pastures.Duncan

Ok these are just off the top of my head but here’s a couple for morels:
1. Sliced crossways and fried in butter, served on toast.
2. If you have a well seasoned pie iron – get it warm, melt some butter in it, add morels and a good dash of Grand Marnier, and cook til sizzlin.
3. Rinse morels and slice lengthwise, dip in an egg and milk mixture, dip in crushed ritz crackers with a bit or parmesan chesse mixed in, deep fry or fry in a cast pan flipping once with oil and butter til cooked golden brown.

Bowhunting and mushroom gathering go hand in hand. In terms of the hazards, picking mushrooms is a lot like flying an airplane: You can play it safe, or push the limit of the envelope. As long as you go with the former approach, it’s quite safe. Stick to the easy ones–morels, puffballs, chicken of the woods, shaggy manes, chantrelles, orange delights. Most of the large boletus family is fine too. There are hundreds of species of mushrooms in North America and a number will make you sick, but only one will flat out kill you. Learn to recognize Aminita phalloides and avoid it and you won’t get in real trouble. Bon appetit! Don

dont mean to but in here, but becareful ,there is a false morel also that is very poisoness, good hunting

Dead — these are open forums and nobody ever “breaks in.” You contribute to the discussion! Indeed there is a false morel, and I wish I had a photo so we could show them side by side. But aside from the name this “falsie” is far more easily identifiable than any other immitators I know. Rather than being conical and with a patterened crenulation, the false morel is rounded and really ugly, convoluted, like an exposed brain. But you are absolutely right that everyone should check a book before they pick and eat. But compared to other ‘shrooms once you see the two compared, I don’t see any way even a blind person picking by brail could mistake them. Chanterelles, for an “on the other hand” example, can be deeply confusing and difficult to tell from nasty fakes. Alas, thanks to a late winter followed immediately by drought, our morel take here in SW CO this year was — zero.

Bloodless
I soak fresh morels in water first, just to get any bugs or grit out. Then I pat them dry with paper towel.
Dip the morels in beaten egg with a bit of milk or cream mixed in, then toss in a mixture of crushed ritz crackers or corn flakes seasoned with parmesan cheese and pepper and maybe some garlic powder or whatever spices you like, fry in a good portion of butter in a skillet on moderate heat until golden brow.
That’s how I do it anyways, I found the recipe online a few years ago and enjoy it.

Wow! that looks great! I never did find any morels along the crick. I checked a couple of times but did not see any. I figure the critters got ’em before I could.
