hello, i’m new to the site, hope to get some good info from ya’ll..

well my wife wants to start shooting the bow, mostly target shooting but she wants to try hunting (deer) with it also. we live in Kansas so there is no min draw weight for hunting but i know the normal weight is 45#’s that might be a little to stiff for her (she is 5′ and 105 lbs) what do ya’ll think is a good low hunting weight?

        Thank Sam

Hey Sam . My wife just got into archery this year . She is about 5’4″ and 140 Lbs. She messes with(trains) other peoples horses for a living ,so shes pretty strong . But she has some shoulder problems . She shoots a 36# bow for 3-D stuff , and it seems to work well for her. I don’t know if that would be enough poundage for deer ,but would be a good weight to start with . I tried her on a 45# recurve but it was too heavy .Better to start light and work up to something heavier .

Hard to say, it depends on the person but I’d stay at 40#or below to start. Contrary to that however my wife took up shooting with me shortly after met about 24 years ago. She’s about 5’5″ and 120 and pulls 53#@25.5″ It’s pretty humbling since I had some nerve damage in my neck at C5 last fall that affected my left shoulder and bicep. She was easily shooting 53# while I struggled with a ’69 Bear Polar at 28#. Talk about motivation for a recovery, I’m not going to make it back to the weights that I used to shoot but I am back ahead of her again.

I have seen deer taken with 35#. If you could work her up to 40# she would be legal in most states.

thanks for the info guys… i made her a bow its solid hickory with sheet rock tape and wood glue backing (looks cool and works great) its 42lbs at 28″ however her draw is 22″ so i’m guessing that it might only be 25lbs or so at 22″, but it will be a good starter bow and easy to learn on.. i will get a pic in soon of it…

Have her talk to Lori (lorithomas@lewistown.net) My wife certainly fits the description–she has to put on high-heels to hit 5-feet. But, she shoots 55# bows, more if necessary. Don
