Going bananas…

With my new bow, I am looking for some new arrows. I would like to have that “one perfect arrow” (thank you Mr. Petersen 😆 ) but I have a question before I order anything. The question is actually about the fletching. It seems the standard cuts are shield or elliptical, but I always liked the way a banana fletching looks. I am not about to shoot beyond 15-20 yards, as that is the extreme maximum of my comfort zone. By the time I get beyond that, compound bows will be considered “traditional” archery :lol:. At that distance, does the cut of the fletching make that much of a difference, especially if the arrow’s weight is really FOC? Again, I am concentrating on “look”, but I do not want to give up accuracy or any other attribute simply for vanity. Any thoughts?

To be honest, I don’t think the fletching shape makes one bit of difference in accuracy. I’ve read a few long, protracted debates about it on message boards. But decades of competitive shooting and bowhunting makes me chalk those the topic up to one of many things that matter more on the internet than in the real world. If you like the looks of banana fletch, go for it. They do make for a cool looking arrow.

The biggest issue with banana fletching is it is very noisy. At least that is true of the high profile banana fletching. I’ve never shot low profile banana fletching, so I can’t address it.

I once fletched a set of arrows with banana fletching and when I shot the arrows on the indoor archery range at The Archery Shop I heard a new noise when I shot. Another shooter on the range said to me “Man, those arrows are noisy!”

I later had my son-in-law shoot the arrows at the target in my backyard. I stood behind a large pine tree that was off to the side and about halfway to the target. They were LOUD even outdoors. I think you might have deer dropping at the sound of the fletched arrow heading toward them with banana fletched arrows.

Bill,

If you cut the profile down the noise will go as well. I’ve used 4″ long 1/2″ high banana’s in the past and they made no noise at all.

I suspected that was the case, but the only banana fletch I’ve had personal experience with is the high profile variety. That would make the banana more a peeling! 😀 (Pun intended)

… And /Or quiet fletching…. any views? I too like the look of banana cut feathers, but have stuck to parabolic for the full figure look. And no- no pun intended… although… maybe some other time:oops:

Well, now I guess the question is where can I get some arrows? Most of the places I see in the magazine are just the “wrong” types of arrows. Either they can’t custom put the correct fletching on, or they have a RH and not a LH, or yes, they have no bananas. 😆

Even though cost is an issue, I understand that you get what you pay for. I have some 5/16″ broadheads from when I was going to attempt to make my own arrows, so using them wought be super.

I would prefer wood, carbon or aluminum. In that order. I would love a barreled shaft, banana fletching, half dozen field point, half dozen broadheads. Would be nice. I would settle for carbon simply because of durability. Aluminum is OK, but my last choice.

So, to make a long question short (too late, I know 🙄 ), any ideas where a guy can get a good set of cutom arrows relativley reasonably priced (without having to make my own)?

I would check 3 Rivers Archery or Kustom King Archery. You can get into a 1/2 dozen at 3 Rivers for around $50 + shipping and I’ve yet to hear any complaints about their shafts.
