I’m sure we’ve all tried both! At one time you couldn’t get me
to wear a three fingered glove. It was a seal skin tab with
it’s fur lying in the direction of the release. What a feeling
smooth, and quiet! Flip it around, and your fingers are back
doing what ever you needed them to do without removing it. I
misplaced my favoite tab. So I took off to the local Bow Shop
and as luck has it, leather tabs are all thats in stock!
But look a glove with Fur on the fingers!! Now BAM you can’t pay me to shoot with a Tab! I don’t know I’m crazy I guess.
Is one really better then the other? You tell me! -
Reb — so far as you being crazy, Ed Abbey said “In a world gone mad, only the half-crazy are fully sane.” I believe him!
Anyhow, I used tabs as a youngster for practice and tournaments, and new at least one bowyer who uses them for hunting. But then and now, for me and most shooters I know, even if you prefer a tab for target shooting, a glove is far more practical for hunting. Just put it on and forget about it. These days there are lots more choices too — thick or thin finger tips, skookum (great stuff but wears out way too fast), etc. for slick release. One of the glories of trad bowhunting is that the gear is so simple — bow, arrows, finger protection and for some, an arm guard (with my current bows, properly braced, I don’t need one). To me a tab in the field is one more thing to lose, one more thing to keep track of and think about when the heat is on. Of course if you can’t shoot worth a poot without one, well there you go. But most can do fine with gloves. IMHO and long experience. Snuffy

Snuffy; Sounds like your a man of “Good Ole Fashion Wisdom”
and I like that. I feel the same way about the simplicity
of Traditional Gear! I’m glad you mentioned having to keep track of,and think about when the heat is on,because I
almost forgot what a pain in the rooster it is to have set on stand with my fingers(Tab) on the string because
you have to in order to be at ready to shoot. One thing on the arm guard is that I,like you very seldom hit my arm,but I wear a guard to hold back my leafy camo on my
3-D jacket. Thanks for your insight, it has come in good use!….Regards Wade> Oh yeah I also believe Mr. Abbey. -
Well.. I agree on all counts with everyone. I must be blessed or cursed. I could never get use to shooting with a tab. Maybe I’m just equipment challenged – and I tried many of them. I liked the Damascus glove for years, but over time they develop a crease in the finger that creates less than a smooth release. When the Big Shot glove came out, I tried it.. the nylon strip on the fingers took a bit of getting use to, but quickly loved it for it’s smooth release and comfort. So much so, that I bought a second one for backup, just in case!

Hey Steve; Thanks for your comment! I bought a Black Widow
shooting glove when I purchased my Recurve from them. It also had the thin nylon strip under a thin piece of leather sewn on the finger tips. And no matter what I did
I just couldn’t get my fingers to bend slightly around the
bow string! I didn’t want to send the glove back,so I cut the strips off the fingers. I’ve been using them since then. Like you stated, they have small groves created by
use. This could be wishful thinking, but I’m hoping
that when I release the bow string it ROLLS out of the groves for a smooth release. Thanks again…Wade -
I’ve never shot with a tab. Never gave it a thought. I bought a glove, and that’s what I started with, and what I’ll finish with. Tabs are small, and could easily get covered by a couple leaves on the ground if you set it down and then move around. And, knowing myself, if my head wasn’t attached, I’d leave it somewhere, too. Thus the attachment of the glove. It’s there, it doesn’t come off unless I’m taking care of nature’s business. I’ve forgotten to take it off after hunting, and stopped at a store for a drink, and the clerk asked me, “What’s the glove for?” I said, “Oh, I was out hunting and forgot to take it off. It’s my glove for shooting my bow.” He said, “Don’t you shoot a release?” “Nah, releases are for guys that shoot training wheels on their bows.” He laughed. Anyway, for me, it’s a glove, or in a real stiff pinch, bare fingers, though that wears on you for a while if you don’t practice that way a lot first. And I would like to get to where I can shoot comfortably all day long at a 3-d shoot or something with no glove.
Michael.

Hey michael; Nice to hear from you again, you must be one of the lucky ones, and just stuck with what everyone seems to be using! I tell ya an all natural release like your
unprotected fingers would be the “REAL DEAL”. You would
have to have some bad as* fingers!! Let me know how that go’s…Regards WadeMichael.

Hank wrote: I am trying to change over to a no glove for hunting. Takes a little bit to get used to but it worked fery well during spring turkey. I could wear my thin camo gloves and my release was very smooth.
Hank that sounds like it may work. I once had a shooting glove with thin finger material and some kind of fur, calf I think. Your glove trick may be a home run! Simple but to be honest, never gave it a thought. Thanks for your input, interesting…Good luck with your “NEAR BARE FINGER SHOOTING”

I was shooting the other day with just fingers, and then I felt it… a stinging in the middel finger tip and a bit of discoloring. When I was talking with MontanaFord on the phone, he asked me how I shot.. I boldly said, “fingers”. Wel I’m now wearing a glove, and getting used to it. Although used, a new one will be bought this next week.
My momma didn’t raise no fool…. 😛

Wow ok now; Thats the stuff we need to hear. Mess your finger up just a little. We can all learn from your mishap! Thanks I’ll keep using my glove, more pressure on the finger tips then one might think. Hope things get better.Wade

Rebstud – My bow string has a rubber slider on it, as it came with the bow that covers the serving, so that is why I could shoot without a glove or a tab. But I have been shooting so much that just over time, it wore on the tip of my finger.
I just came in from shooting with the glove on, and my fingers don’t feel any sting at all. I did have to get used to the leather on the glove, because I like to feel the string. But with more use, they really do help. I have a tab coming with my new/used longbow, and I will try it, but I do like the glove better.

Ok I got ya! Thought you were bare fingering it. My buddy has one of those “No Gloves” on his fishing rigs. My glove has groves in it,and is pretty sensitive so thats what I
like to shoot. Always like to hear options. Thanks Wade -

Gloves have slight groves in them but I don’t think it
Creates a problem. I release my fingers, and it slips
Smoothly out of the groves. I don’t think you can have a
Shooting glove for very long before it gets groves.
I can feel the string well enough. Thanks for your
Comments,and patience! Wade -
I guess I’ll be the odd man out on this one. I tried a glove for a while when I was a kid and never could get used to it. I like being able to feel my anchor with my fingertips, and I’ve never gotten nearly as clean of a release with a glove as with a tab.
I’ve lost a tab or two over the years at 3D shoots, but never while hunting. Even if I did, I always have a spare with me anyway, so it’s not really a concern.

I’ve only been shooting since last November and I was using one of my Dad’s old three finger gloves. I decided to get a new glove and bought a really thin one with calf fur. It didn’t take long before I had tingling and numbness in my middle finger. I picked up a new glove with the thicker leather and it made all of the difference in the world. By the way, I shoot three under.

Thanks for your input J.W.; When I tried the tab thing it was a little different for me, actually just the opposite. When I would draw my bow to my knock point, which is the feeling of my
middle finger tip right at the corner of my mouth,I would
release the string. But with the tab I couldn’t feel my knock
point. Odd maybe I had a tab to big for my hands(although all my gloves are XL). Maybe it was just the feeling of the tab
on my face? I don’t know! Again thanks for commenting..Wade -

I hear ya Buzzard; I bought one of those as I stated in the forum somewhere! And I’m with ya. I liked the release,it was smooth enough but,the fingers on that type of glove(the one with the fur) are super thin. One would think thats what were all looking for but you better have some tough fingers. My fingers never started tingling, and its because I stop using it. Just didn’t like that string
pulling on my fingers that hard! Thanks for the your
comment,Thought I was being a wennie!..Wade
