“The secret to understanding the difference between recurves in longbows, is to know there is not a lot of difference, and you really shoot them much the same. I don’t shoot my longbows any different than I do my recurves; weight is pulled into the thumb/web of the hand at draw, and fingers lightly around the bow…just enough to keep it from flying out of my hand, on the loose. Some would have you believe it’s magic, but it only seems that way.” George D. Stout

Mr. Stout, I had an epiphany yesterday! I was out in the archery course trying to get a bit more focused in the quiet of the woods when it hit me. I’ve had it in my mind that shooting this bow had to be different than shooting my recurves, so I would intentionally hold the bow just to the right of where I would normally hold a recurve and have been getting very inconsistent results with this. However, yesterday, in the peace and quiet of the woods, it came to me, like someone whispered to me, “just shoot”. I had to take a moment to think about it. “Why not just shoot the way you’ve been shooting all along, for the past 8 months?”, I asked myself. So, I looked at what I wanted to hit, raised the bow, drew back, touched anchor and let her fly, without holding and making the adjustments I’d been making, and the arrow went where I wanted it to go. I went on to shoot a wonderful round on the 3D pieces scattered throughout the woods, including a stump sitting shot of 25 yards to a hind quarter piece of a deer 3D wedged between two small trees, that even with my recurves, I’ve nailed one of the trees every time out. By far, the best round of shooting this bow I’ve had yet.

        Thanks for your enlightenment!

I should have made my handle Two Cents, because that’s about what I have to comment on most of these issues. I have to say I shoot much more consistently when I get a good solid grip on my longbow. Most of the pressure is in the web with a bit on the heel of my hand, but a good firm grip. Two pennies.

That said, as I’m still a student of shooting, Mr. Stout’s lessons have been very valuable. I’ve watched his videos over and over and they have certainly made me a better shot. I’d love to have a real lesson with him someday. Mr. Stout, thank you for your contributions.

          best, dwc

Sometimes we all can think too much, and I’m as guilty as the next guy. Glad your shooting is coming along. Once we realize this sport is supposed to by fun, and not stressful, it becomes a bit easier. Keep up the good shootin’. 😉

                  George,

Is there a place where all your videos are kept, such as youtube.com? Thank you, dwc

I’ve been away for a week…went to the Pa. Bowhunter Festival, in Forksville, Pa. That show has been running since 1956. Yep, I’m an old guitar picker too…just love it and it soothes the soul, just like shooting arrows. Just a little over a week till bow season here in Pa. Going to try for a whitetail with a 50’s solid fiberglass bow. I have a Parabow that shoots really well with the old fiberglass arrows, so we will see what comes of it.

                            Hi George,

I was out working on two stands today. I’m in the Poconos, NEPA, waiting for the next eight days to pass. I wish you luck with your old bow. I enjoyed hearing you play the guitar and have enjoyed watching your shooting videos. Great stuff. I’ll be watching for your report on how your season goes and if the winds are with me, I hope to post my own. best wishes, dwcphoto

Even with the 2 week head start here in 5C, I still have not even gotten out. I may just wait until the state-wide archery season opens, even though I am in the Army that weekend. I will probably take off a few days that week. Good luck to all. Be safe. Keep the updates coming. They are real motivators.

                              😀

Be careful….and don’t pull a Dave Petersen style tree stand descent. Ouch…Dave….that’s why I stay on the ground; I can fall from a standing up position. I had to go take a couple Ibuprofen after reading your article. Good luck to everyone and get well David.
