For them that care, the University of Wisconson is offering a free month-long online course about hunting and the land ethic. Looks like it will be heavy on Leopold, which is fine with me. I don’t know if it will be any good, but I thought I’d take it.

Thanks, Steve. For obvious reasons, that’s my favorite picture of Leopold. I too will give it a try.
Of course, like everything else, those who could benefit the most won’t be interested.

You must have missed it while duck hunting–Mom posted it on weekly tips. Linda and I are signed up for it. Thanks for the reminder.
Whoops 🙄 But I rest comfortably in the knowledge that not much has changed… I usually end up playing catch up.
As my wife says, If I would just pay attention I would know what’s going on. 😳
That’s ok. I’ll mull the error of my ways over while eating brined redhead’s over wild rice with a side of home grown green beens and roasted almonds and home made applesauce 8)
This will be the first class I’ve taken in about 8 years. I’m as nervous as a little school girl…

Understand all:D Here is a piece of survival knowledge that Clay hasn’t covered may help with that duck dinner if you forget the Swiss army knife.

Hi Guys,
Is this a class to work on your own schedule or do they have a scheduled class time? Thanks! david

I’ve never taken a computer class, but I’d guess you watch the lectures on your own schedule, take the quizzes as you can, and that’s about it.
It’s free, you can’t screw it up.

Sounds like a plan. I’m in and I just dug out my Sand County Almanac. Looking forward to it. All the best, dwc

Here’s the official answer to my question about the class schedule. Thanks, dwc
You can take the class at your own pace. We have this class set up so that once a week’s material is posted, it will remain available for the rest of the course.
There is only one due date, and it only matters if you want to receive a Statement of Accomplishment. To receive a Statement of Accomplishment, all quizzes have to be finished by March 21st, which is one month after the course ends.
If you have any questions in the future, don’t hesitate to send them this way.
Thanks for your interest in the course!

I just signed up. For those of you who haven’t before read Sand County Almanac, you’re in for a treat. For me and many others for who hunting and the outdoors is a way of life, not just a seasonal pastime, Leopold is the beginning and the end. He saw it all clearly back then, and said it more precisely and memorably than anyone has since, and his ideas and dictums remain unimpeachable today. I can never have too many refresher courses on this remarkable man’s conservation and personal epiphanies and how they will always influence us going forward. Also Leopold was the Stephen Hawking of sporting conservation. Plus he’s easy and fun to read, the wisdom of his ideas being self-evident.

I also signed up for the class. Makes me feel quite proud to be associated with a group of guys with such interest in a very necessary topic! I’ve read Sand County Almanac so many times and it never gets old! The misses gave me Round River for Christmas and I’m knee deep into it now! Looking forward to the class, should make for some awesome discussions!

Having spent time with Aldo’s son Luna, breaking bread as well as sitting in on many of his teachings. Anyone will benefit from any of that family’s teachings and views…..Enjoy that time….

Finished Sand County over the weekend. I’ve read parts of it a few times, but this was the first time straight through. Great stuff. Looking forward to the class starting tomorrow. Best to all. Dwc

Well I just finished my last “test” for this class. I found it to be very interesting and learned a few things to boot. While it did take some time I didn’t really have to spare, I am glad I went through it. Have a few new books to read too…
I hope others that took the class enjoyed it too. What a great free service the college has provided.

I learned quite a bit too, Steve. It was an interesting experience and I found it very beneficial to see opinions from so many different walks of life. I do wish the course could have run a bit longer. I’m sure there is so much more to learn and to hear from people who have studied Leopold extensively and have interacted with him directly was very cool!
A good experience overall, I’m glad I did it.

Glad to hear it was a good educational experience. I was hesitant to sign up for this one due to some other pending commitments, but I would certainly consider doing one in the future, whether it be on Leopold, or another related subject.

It was a good class. I finally finished the fourth week last night. In bits and pieces a lot of it gets discussed right here. It was well worth the time. Thanks for the original post to make me aware. Best, dwc

I also took the class. It was interesting. I believe it did a pretty good job at promoting hunting as a part of the American conservation model. There was some controversial issues over predetor introduction as a part of that model. But overall it presented many reasons for hunting. Reasons that new generations need to insure we continue to conserve and promote access to land and its “wildlife” which belongs to all of us.
