I’m considering buying some footed shafts. I would appreciate any advise you guys may have.:? I saw recently in another thread that someone had heard about inconsistent weight and spine. I like the concept of the footed shaft but given the cost, my expectations are going to be fairly high.

I just ordered a dozen POC’s footed with Cocobola from Great Basin Footed Shafts. They should be here in the next day or two. I have never bought from him before but he has a good reputation on other sites. If the spines and weights are as he says (I trust they will be) all 12 shafts will be within 1# of spine and weight was within 13 grs. He has some others listed that are pretty tight grouped also.
Here is a link to how I got in touch with him.

I ordered a dozen from Whispering Wind recently and they were shipped the next day and arrived promptly. All are close in weight and spine and straight. I’ll fletch and shoot a few this week and let you know how that goes. Only problem is they’re 23/64 and I prefer a thinner shaft. Price was $90 a dozen plus $10 priority shipping, which is considerably cheaper than some others. WW uses laminated pine for the shaft and I chose Actionwood for the footing. WW shafts provide 25 to 50 grains extra weight at the tips, depending on what footing material you choose.
Bruce — what did you wind up ordering and how are they? Dave

I finished a few of the above mentioned shafts yesterday and even had a little time to shoot a couple. They flew great! I was (maybe still am a little) concerned with a barrel taper but man they flew nice with 125, 145 and 160 grain heads.
Even after letting the 12 shafts acclimate for a few days to East coast humidity, I only had to slightly straighten 2 of them.
I would recommend Great Basin Footed Shafts to anyone looking.

Well shucks, why do they use barrel taper, which has generally been relegated to target archery while single taper is the standard for hunting? Strange …:?

Dave I have not ordered anything yet. I was going to order “Gyyrafacon” from Whispering Winds but at the same time I have a new recurve on order. I contacted my bowyer to get specs that I needed to order the arrows and he suggested that better to wait until I have the bow. Not sure now I have ordered bow weight @ 46# – 48# @ 28″ with fastflite string. The bow is supposed to be ready end of March. Kinda wanted arrows so I could shoot. I really like the idea of the laminated pine and have heard good thing from my bowyer about Whispering Winds. Let me know how yours work. Thanks.

Bruce — I’d go ahead and order the shafts, if for no other reason than to help steady the nerves while awaiting the new bow. 😆 All WW needs is your draw weight and length. I don’t see how having the bow in hand or not changes anything. I’m still on hold with mine, being currently snowed in and I need to visit the local trad shop for field points and feathers, but as I said they sure look good as bare shafts. If I find that they need to be shortened a wee bit to stiffen spine, I will make self-nocks, which the laminated pine is perfectly set up for. I’m likely to buy a WW internal-footing jig also, soon’s I can get a handy source of tungston rod. dp

BRUC and others — I finally got the Whispering Wind footed shafts built, using 3 5″ fletchings and 190grain field points. As I mentioned, they came in the standard “within 10 grains” on weight, though I don’t have a spine tester. They all looked nice and straight. So I made up 3 finished arrows and just did some test shooting, at 17 yards which is the most I can get right now without shoveling a 4′ depth of snow. All three arrows within 1″ and one Robin Hood that blew up the plastic nock but didn’t damage the shaft. That’s better than average accuracy for me. The final arrow did kick up a wee bit but still hit the bull perfectly. That’s likely just a nocking point issue as mine is set for skinny carbons and these are 23/64 woodies. I need to shoot a lot more, from longer distances, and also to calculate the FoC. I’ll let you know how that comes out but at this point have zero reason not to highly recommend these shafts. dave

I received 2 DZ footed shafts from Great Basin Footed Shaft. These were outstanding, close spine and grain weight. Mine were footed with bubinga or cocobola.
