Anyone making and/or using footed arrows? I am getting the Renfro’s DVD on footed arrows and wondering if anyone has any experience with footed arrows. What type of wood do you like for the fore shaft?

I like footed shafts, because of the front weight,
i prefer Violetwood and Blacklocust, (you can get them boiled
and so it`s very dark ) and last but not least, footed arrows
          look very nice.

I’ve just started making mine. Used Walnut for the first batch because I had some and didn’t want a lot of extra weight for these arrows as I will use them for 3D shoots. I’ll use something heavier like Osage for arrows that I will hunt with. I used a jig that I bought from The Nocking point (3 Rivers also has it). It works great and is easy to set up. Get a small block plane (make sure it is sharp!) and you will be suprised how fast you can get the blanks round.

The only footing I have done is the simple double bevel. I have not tried to do the 4-way bevel. My footing practice has been more out of neccesity than for any other reason. I have used dogwood, ashe, hickory, walnut, and used port orford cedar from broken shafts to repair arrows that broke near the tip. It’s a good way to repair shafts and good practice for when I decide to use some fancy woods.

As a side note, use caution and a respirator when using exotic woods. Some of them have bad health risks if the dust is inhaled. Some indigenous woods can have harmful effects too. Theres too many to list here but it would be wise to google your wood type to see if it has any side effects.

I have a long draw so footed arrow shafts allow for getting me the length need. Talk to Bob and Wispering Winds for information about footed shafts. Mike

I get mine from Bob @ Whispering Wind too. They are great arrows.
