Sorry if this has been brought up before but I couldn’d find it by doing a search.
My light set up is a 30 1/2 inch Gold Tip 7597 with 100grn insert and a 125grn Magnus Stinger. My heavy set up is the same arrow except with a 260grn Abowyer Brown Bear.
Bow is 64″ Dryad Oracle 58lbs at my draw 28″.I shot both side by side and I like the faster arrow.
My light set up is in the %18 range. My Heavy set up is i the %24 range.
Do you Think its worth the %6 at the cost of some speed?
Do you think that the %18 is good enough for Nilgai?I did notice a penetration difference. The Stinger is actually a 4 blade if you count the two bleeders. I saw that Magnus makes a single blade at 150grn. Would any of you try that out?
I like the Abowyers(please don’t take this wrong)but I’ve already damaged two of them by hitting my cedar fence. One of them broke in half upon pulling it out of a 2×4 and the other was pulled out with a broken tip. The Magnus are just cheaper to replace if thats going to keep happening.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx in Advance -
Bully26,
I think if you will re-read what you wrote you will see that you have already answered your own question.
I’ve never hunted Nilgai, but from what I understand about them is they have a very thick skin and are tough as heck to get on the ground. That being said, then I’d say forget the speed and look at penetration.
I understand why you like the faster arrow. Speed, from the aspect of shooting tournaments is great for covering those mistakes in yardage judgement. Thats why most of the tournament shooters shoot as light of an arrow as they can get away with. If you can close that gap (yes, everyone does shoot some sort of gap system, wether it be intential or not) in where you place the arrow before releasing by half, it decrease your odds of totally missing.
Increased weight also quitens the bow.
The only Nilgai I’ve ever seen heard me comng well before I really knew what I was looking at. I was walking in the sandy soil trying to avoid the catcus and caught a movement. Thinking it might be a hog I did my best to turn on the stealth mode. That sucker must have had a rocket attached to his butt. Atleast that what it looked like when he left.
I can’t commit on the comparison of the two heads since I’ve never shot Abowyer. I have used the Magnus stinger and consider them to be a very good head for whitetail.

Bully26,
I use the Abowyer brown bears and had one chip when I hit a rock once. They said to mail it back and they sent me a new one. They have a life time warranty.

Thanx Brennan I need to give them a call.
Troy,
So then the six percent foc is worth the 4-6 inch drop in trajectory?
It seemed that the bleeders on the magnus are the reason for the less penetration(not really sure) but they do make a true 2 blade plus 25grn.Thanx for the help.

This made me laugh a bit Troy. This sounds exactly like when me and Bully attempted to hunt Nilgai our first time. We were just walking in it out and before we could figure out what scared the crap out of us, it was to late. That Nilgai ran right through Mesquite, Huisache and every other sticky bush we have down here. Just this morning on the way into town i pulled over to the side of the road with my daughter and Glassed 3 Bull Nilgai feeding alongside some horses. They were about 500 yds out in the open field but they had us pegged. I swear they could see our eyeballs and heard us whispering from inside my truck. They are majestic animals and taste even more so……Thanks for the laugh Troy it brought back memories that Bully can atest to.

Bully,
I think that a properly tuned arrow will show alot less drop than what your getting.
After getting my FOC up to 28% and properly tuned I can’t see more than 2″ drop out to 25yds over my arrows that were in the 16% range. My 28% arrows weigh 700grs. the 16% arrows weighted 525gr.
Proper tuning is the key.
I never tried the two blade. The 4blade I shot were both Stingers and Buzz cut. The only difference I could tell in the two heads was the fact that the buss cut produced a better blood trail.

Crystalshrimp is right. I don’t even think I saw it. I heard the brush kind of close and stepped back because I thought I heard CS say “javaline!”. I’m sure some of you know the damage that a cornered javaline can cause. I was ready to climb a tree!
Troy,
It was when I started practicing kneeling that I really noticed a difference. I think it may have been a form issue. When I shoot standing I noticed that my front foot is right on the target line. I don’t align with my toes. I mean an imaginary line to the target. I’m right handed and was practicing an animal approaching from my right side. I was getting off my stool, kneeling, turning and not getting all the way around. It is something that I really need to work on.
Again, thanx a bunch. -
Bully,
I can asure you when that nilgia came busting out I too almost crapped my pants. It busted out of the brush not over ten yards from me. I was thinking hog and what busted out, had it been a hog, would have been world class. I’ve been told they average about 700 pounds. This one looked like it weighed a ton. Big and dark blueish gray in color. With their high frontend and sloping back, it looked like some sort of monster. Never having seen one before startled the hell out of me. It took afew minutes to realize what it was. All I thought of when it came out was S#!…. well you understand.
