        Hi all

The season opens for me Saturday July 14th. Thats less than a week away! Ive spotted 3 bucks that Id be happy to fill my freezer with. This being southern CA, the three are watching their weight for the paparazzi.

Anyways, my bow is ready along with 2 strings and a set of matched…. shafts. Fletched, matched and naked on the tip! Ive been trying to get some 200gr Grizzlys or something similar and even online ive been getting screwed.

So i have some Zwickey No Mercys single bevel. Last night i put on a 75gr woody weight and then the Zwickey which weighs 130gr. Ive never tried this technique and am new to the high FOC thinking. Im thinking this should be alright. Am I actually thinking correctly or have I made a 2nd mistake? (First mistake was not ordering the grizzlies 6 weeks ago)

        Thanks all

One of the good things about CA was the early deer season [ as long as you can handle the Heat!]-haha– Used to hunt Btails & pigs in the Coast Range [ around Hunter Ligget].

Your set up should work oK, be fine for deer { as long as it flys well}– you can order Tuffheads / Abowyer Brown Bears{both good heads – I shoot THs pers} and get them in time* – If you do not mind the extra expense.

are you after Co Blacktails or SCal mule deer?

Ill be going after Blacktails. Im in Ventura County. Theres a lot of not so definitive info on whether the deer here are btails or Pacific Hybrids. I am going to get my FHL pass in the fall to go for pig. Never hunted them before and I hear FHL is pretty good.

Ill check out Tuffheads for sure. Good to know the woody weight and head will be alright.

            Thanks man!

              Gmonk –

I think Ventura is in the “SoCal Mule deer” area where FHL is Btails. 6 of one 1/2 dozen of the other –both tough to hunt cover lovers!

I have not hunted FHL in many a year but was Successful on Pig [my first one]and deer many times. “Golf” [G] area was one of my favorites bordered the lake and private land. Good for deer [especially in dry conditions]Good Luck!

Heck I hear they have Tule Elk Hunts Now!!

Tuffheads are great – I like em

PS – in my Limited experience [ as I have only been working on efoc for a year+] I found I had to go up in spine to get my arrows to tune properly, with the heavier points. Make sure any final choice you make in heads/weight shoots well from your bow.

Thanks! I put together 6 arrows with the 205g point set up in 3 different spines. Once it cools down ill be shooting them tonite.

Everyone tells me something different about the deer here in Ventura County, SoCal mulies, blacktails or pacific hybrids. I hunted mulies when I lived in UT so Im calling them mulies here as well.

Cover hunting will be new for me so we’ll see how it turns out.

I was out in Carrizo Plain looking for bucks this past weekend and saw the biggest one of my life. When I glassed him it turned out to be a Tule Elk with a herd of 60 or so coming up behind him! 30 minutes later a herd of Pronghorns came within 20 yards. Not the type of wildlife i was expecting to see in So Cal! Of course, we didnt see any bucks. A few does and that was it.

anytime – hope it was helpful and works out for you.

quite the sea change – Utah to SoCal – [I live in NM]

I am not sure the Biologists are sure, what deer is where in socal -haha – tough [ thick cover] but fun to hunt.

Interesting and way cool you have the Tule Elk* near you! – but in My experience Elk pretty much go where they want—
