I am new at arrow building and need a reccomendation for a good glue that is compatable with ghasket paint. I tried Duco and it does not work very well and tends to bubble up the paint. I also tried Bohing fletching tape and almost lost an eye. So, any help is appreciated.

          Hi,

I’ve been using the fletch tape since I started building arrows and have not had a problem. Loosing an eye could be trouble. What happened? dwc

I also use fletch tape and would like to hear what happened. If there is a safety concern I’d like to know.

            Thanks

            Duncan

I follow the directions from 3Rivers, with a drop of beyond bond fore and aft. The feathers really hang on, with the exception that once in a while when the whole arrow blasts through a branch or a target bag a feather can tear off. I’d still like to know if there is anything I’m missing. thanks, dwc

Folks, I exagerated the almost losing an eye thing to give some ooomph to the dificaulty I had with the tape. I literally can not see the stuff when I try to peal off the protective part to expose the adhesive; thus the eye reference.

I’m laughing now! I thought the feathers were flying like a shot chicken when you released the string! Yes, sometimes it’s hard to keep a straight line going with that stuff. It’s definitely not something I try to do while watching TV. Good glasses and bright light. Glad you’re not writing back with a patch over one eye. Arrrgh, Merry Christmas!

my little lady just bought me the gear necessary to build my own arrows. I too have the same question. Which glue would be best for carbons? I shoot Bemans Camo Hunters. The guy down at the shop usually glues my feathers on with stick glue with out wraps and I have to admit it hasnt failed me yet. Id like to use a glue out of a tube that is reliable. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Duco is my glue of choice for wood shafts, and at least one professional arrowsmith I know. For carbon, Fletch Tite Platinum is the “industry standard.” No matter glue or shaft material, it always helps to clean the shafts where the feathers will go with rubbing alcohol. I’m always amazed how much dirt I get off … from handling, machining, etc. Then I try not to touch the clean shafts with my hands where the feathers will go. And don’t forget to put a little dab of glue on the front of each quill, after you remove the finished arrow from the jig, to double-anchor that vulnerable leading edge … I smooth it out a bit with a finger so it won’t dry as a lump. Enjoy, dp

I’ve had good luck with fletchtite premium on carbons and I’ve used the fletch tape too. I use Duco on woods that are pre-dipped from manufacterer or wipe on poly on my home made shafts. I have not used gasket laquer.

Had a fletch rip off of a carbon today when it went through a brush pile. It was taped on but had neglected to add a spot of glue at the leading edge.

No Bugsy this time, just completely missed “Bucky” the deer target from about 35 yds!
