Hi Folks, I think I started visiting this site about 12 years ago when I started bow hunting. I haven’t been here for a bit, but wanted to share a photo of my first buck with a bow. I’ve taken a handful of doe and then I had a couple years when I didn’t connect with a bow at all. I had a real bruiser come by on Friday and stopped behind a hemlock bough at about 5 yards. I had full draw on a window he only had to take a step to get into.  Instead he scurried along offering me no shot. Man, did my heart rate rocket as he meandered off after a doe.

Not wanting to blow out that spot, as it’s a favorite, I hung a couple new stands on Sunday morning in the rain. Yesterday I got off work and hit the grocery store, so by the time I got home and dressed, the best option was to get into the closest stand available. That was one I put up Sunday morning. That was about 4:40 in the afternoon.

Within a few minutes a doe came bounding through the woods right toward me. I was startled that I was seeing a deer so quickly and from that direction.  I lifted my bow to get ready. I’m not sure if she saw the movement or was simply exercising an evasive maneuver from the buck chasing her. The pursuer came quickly, grunting his way through the woods like his nose was dragging him on a string. He passed her zig and came straight in. With the obligatory MEER!, he stopped at about 6-7 yards and it all happened as it’s supposed to. The buck was extra courteous as it ran to within 40 yards of my shed to where I had to drag it.

Thanks for checking this out. I wish you all a happy Halloween! Best, dwc

Thank you very much! I have the head in a tank of water simmering for a day to make a European mount. I retraced the steps and found my 225 gr tuffhead. After washing it off, it still popped hair off arm. I’ll strop that and put it on a fresh arrow. Best, dwc

Dang Dave!  Way to start killing bucks!  What a beautiful dark hide.

And the picture isn’t too shabby either.  Thanks for sharing.
