Ive been making stickbows for about 8 years now. Never made anything fancier than some reflexed bamboo backed hickory or ipe.
I wont stop making bows, but I am well aware that my skill is average. Thus, Ive been shooting average bows. It recently occurred to me that I don’t know what Im missing out on so ive been researching a bit and will be buying a bow. Maybe some folks here can help me out.
I dont want to spend more than 500 bucks on a r/d longbow. Ive got a longer draw, not quite 30 inches and am comfortable in the mid 50s poundage.
Im not into big risers or takedowns at this point. Big sight windows turn me off as well. Im learning slowly to step out of my comfort zone.
So…. Im looking at one custom. A friend of mine is getting started selling his bows. Bamboo backed Ipe, centershot, fancy riser wood options. This will cost me about 450.
Ive also been checking out the Bear Montana. Never shot glass before, looks like a good deal and a solid intro into glass.
The Schafer bows look great. I didnt see the price on the site though I doubt its in my price range.
Anything else I should be looking at? I wont be purchasing a new bow until Oct when the season is done out here.
Thanks all

Ain’t it supposed to be the other way around, shoot production, shoot custom, then build your own. Seems your progression is backwards 😉 .
All kidding aside, the only bow you mentioned that I have owned is the Montana, and as you said it is a good shooter and a good intro bow.
However if you did want to try a custom I would recommend the Bama bow line. Their designs are pretty much in line with your preferences, and their prices are quite reasonable.
Make sure to post a pic or two when you pick up your new stick.

My progression does seem to be going the wrong way. I’ll probably end up with wheels next year!
Most of my bow building is done with school groups these days. And like I said, I don’t make very efficient bows, rather average. A custom would be a nice gift to myself.
Bama bows look great. I’m gonna contact them and send a deposit.
Thanks!
