I have been hunting for 4-5 years with a recurve/longbow, and have been practicing for many years beyond that. I have never taken a large animal with any bow before. This year I told my dad that after all these years of practicing, I finally felt that I knew what I was doing with a stick and string.

I want to go ahead and say that I misinterpreted the distance visually, and also the shoulder that I was shooting at, but God blessed me with a humane/quiet kill. The doe didn’t run more than 60 yards.

I had ranged everything I possibly could to my left and in front of me, but never thought I would shoot anything to my right. When the deer stopped, she was on my right. I had this moment of pure confidence that I have never felt before. I remember loosing the arrow and that is it. The distance came out to about 40 yards, and I had a pass through. I have practiced at this distance just to get used to smaller targets visually, but I made a hard rule of no more than 25 yards. I am using mahogany wood shafts with 150 grain woody weights and 155 grain grizzly single-bevel. They made my mistake turn into a clean kill.

I want to thank everyone that has written a post/posted a reply to any of my questions regarding the Ashby way.

Thanks! My dad said at least I proved what I was preaching to him about the use of higher FOC arrows.

Sumner, excellent! This is another great story of success and reflection. If we’re not learning, we ain’t breathing. Enjoy those steaks!

Very meaningful time. Reflect and savor. Very happy you got rewarded for all your effort.
