Hi Guys,
After three seasons of bowhunting I took my first with a bow yesterday afternoon, just before dark. Today I’m going to finish cutting the meat and packing it into the freezer with tenderloins for supper.
My little whitetail doe was not much of a test perhaps, but the wound in the lower 1/3rd of the heart bled immediately and the doe expired about 50 yards up the trail in probably less than two minutes. This afternoon I went back out and found the arrow firmly planted into the stoney hillside right where the deer was walking when I released.
Thanks for helping make my first archery kill a textbook experience. If I would have had to track her it would have been easy. I appreciate the tuning help I got from you guys, especially Troy. The FOC reading got me on track to build an arrow that would fly straight and do what was intended. I got lucky enough to make a good shot so the arrow could do its part.
I want to thank Leon Stewart for building me a bow I want to shoot often. It’s pure pleasure. Leon has also offered me advice on a few occasions and has always been right on the mark, making me a better archer every time. I also want to thank by mentor Rick who has been really helpful and has taught me a bundle of information in my transition from rifle hunter to archer.
The bow is a Leon Stewart Slammer Special, 46#. The boradhead is a 225 grain Tuffhead. The arrow is a Beman ICS Bowhunter 400, weighing 625 grains total with an FOC of 28%.

Good work, David! We here know how hard you’ve worked to have your gear and skills up to snuff, and now it has paid off. My first deer was a “little doe” also and remains all these years later one of my proudest moments in trad bowhunting. If hunting is a contest at all, it’s a contest to do our best in the field with the right motivations in our hearts … not a contest between hunters. Congratulations.

Congrats on what I have no doubt will be the first of many deer.

Thanks, guys. I’m lucky to have an excellent teacher here to hunt with and I’m also fortunate to have you guys offering advice along the way.
I ground a good bit of burger and fed a fresh tender loin to my family tonight. I’ll be packaging meat before work tomorrow and hope to get out a little more before the first season closes here on Monday. I wish you all the best. peace, dwc

Woodchuck, keep at it. I think one of the best things this traditional archery is teaching me is patience. I used to joke that going to church as a kid probably made me a better fisherman because I had to sit still for an hour once a week. Good luck! dwc

There is nothing better, or harder to come by, then a little doe. Strong work.

Thanks for all your comments. Much appreciated! Everything that hasn’t been eaten is in the freezer, except for the bones to make soup. Good luck to you all. best, dwc

Thanks again. I gotta start using that broken duck phrase here and see if it takes off. I won’t get slapped will I? dwc

I believe the expression here is “skunk”. Either way, it’s off you, so good job. Waiting to get the “stink” or “quack” off me. Be well, all.
